Going up to Crystal after smelt and perch tomorrow, wondering if I could get some advice on where to access the lake. Also any info on where to look for perch. Did a search here and have map quest to lobb road, is this where I need to park, and head out after the smelt?

Yup thats where to go and park. There are 2 different areas where they're fishing smelt. From the access point there is one to the left and another to the right. You can't miss either, lots of shanties in both spots.................
I'm headed that way again Saturday afternoon...........burbot/whitefish in the afternoon and then smelt at night...........

Normally we hit Higgins but the bite just hasn't been there the last 2 years so wanna try something new. Have never really went after the white fish... any pointers on how to rig?

I hear that, I'm a die hard Higgins man my self and I did A1 last year but this year you have to work very hard to find the perch and the smelt have just started to hit but still is slow. I'm heading to crystal for saturday night smelting and hope to do good cause I know that Crystal is the place to be for the smelt:corkysm55. Maybe you will see me out there I will be the one with the bright Green light

Smelt turned off at Lobb since this last weekend. I hope they will turn back on this weekend for everyone. there has been a buttload of people out there this year, and I think its due to accessability of the lake. Early ice, they were getting upwards of 200+ a nite. I havent heard of any big numbers like that in a while, but then again, I'm happy with 30 for a nite.
I'll prolly be out this thur./fri./sat./ nites, look for the brown permanent shanty with the name "Kelley" on it. It's at the beginning of the group to the left.
if anyone needs help with a GPS point thats far away from the crowd, that you can SLAY the smelt at and is very easily accessed, PM me

Anyone doing good on the perch? I'm from the Bay City area and the wind is supposed to be bad this weekend and I don't want to risk going out 3-4 miles on the Saginaw Bay with a strong off-shore wind. I was going to make a trip to Higgins, but the perch are pretty spotty from what I hear. It's a long drive, so I don't want to waste the gas if the perch are slow. Any other inland lakes hot for perch? I do have a quad, but the snow may be too much for that. Thanks for any info.

The smelt fishing is great as long as you DO NOT FISH IN THE SHANTY CITY. (hint) Fish off to the side where there is no one around and you will catch a lot more because the fish will come to only your shanty and not scatter around to everyone elses around you.

yeah parking there is tough. I drive another 1/4 mile or so further down the road from that launch and pull off on the side of the road where there's usually plenty of room. Where of else did you find the whitefish? We couldn't find where they were last time we went there and we tried several different depths.

This past Saturday they were parking "ON" the ice out from the launch a touch. I made a trip back to shore just at dark and there was 33 trucks/cars parked "ON" the lake right in front of the launch............ice seemed to hold all that weight in that area. Luckily no one was foolish enough to drive all the way out..........this was on Crystal.

We fished the spot Koby set us up with and ended up with 400 smelt and 2 whitefish and about a dozen perch. The last night we fished Lobb Rd. and took another 100. This is much better than we have done at Higgins in the past 2 years and we are planning another trip up in 2 weeks. Thanks again Koby.

Wish we would have used your coordinates last Saturday. We kind of went a long way west of there. Based on getting the quad stuck the weekend before not too far from that area I was kind of leery heading towards your numbers.
Really want to go back up there again but its getting expensive, tank and a half of fuel pulling the quad up there.............bout $100 or so a trip.....:sad:
Maybe with the rain from the other day some of the snow has melted on that end/side of the lake..................:help:

if you can make it back up there, you can do it without the quads to save cash
did i give you the GPS for the "parking lot" thats only .3 miles from the spot?
PM me

Koby, thanks for the coordinates unfortunately I had to leave the ice early on Saturday so I wasn't able to give your spot a fair chance but sure will the next time I'm out. Don't worry, your secret spot is safe with me.
I also saw all of the trucks on the ice off Lobb, regardless of the ice thickness I don't think I would park my truck in the middle of a group like that. Average 6,000 lb per truck x 35 trucks comes up to over 200,000 pounds sitting on the ice. Send a pic of that to your truck insurance guy for a little fun.
