As ice fishing season draws to a close, Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials are reminding anglers that deadlines for shanty removal are fast approaching and will be enforced.
Anglers in both Cheboygan and Emmet counties have until midnight on March 15 to remove shanties, but fishermen in other counties only have a number of days remaining.

For anglers who have shanties on Lake St. Clair, Sunday is the deadline to remove their shanties from the lake.

Many other Lower Peninsula counties share the March 15 removal date with Cheboygan and Emmet counties. Included in that group are: Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Arenac, Bay, Benzie, Charlevoix, Clare, Crawford, Gladwin, Grand Traverse, Iosco, Isabella, Kalkaska, Lake, Leelanau, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee, Montmorency, Newaygo, Oceana, Ogemaw, Osceola, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, Roscommon and Wexford.

For all other counties in the Lower Peninsula, the deadline is midnight on Saturday.

For all counties in the Upper Peninsula, the deadline is by midnight on March 31.

If ice becomes unsafe, though, all shanties have to be removed regardless of the date.

After the deadlines, shanties may be placed and removed the same day until ice conditions are deemed unsafe, explained DNR Press Secretary Mary Dettloff.
