Are you supposed to be able to tell how big the fish are with these things? Also I sometimes have to turn my gain up pretty high to get my lure to stop flashing. I just got it a month and a half ago so Im not sure exactly how to use it yet.

Thanks Merv

I have had the VX-1 for just a month now and I can't belive I fished for all those years through the ice without it. You can definetly tell the diffrence between small fish and large fish. When the perch are under me it is a bunch of greenish yellow flashes. When the gators are there they are very wide red lines with yellow flashes mixed in. Try turning your gain down till your lure stops flashing. I have also found that fishing in less than fifteen feet of water I have to turn my gain up alittle to be able to get the zoom to work. The manual has all of the answers.

You should be able to tell size. The better your unit, the easier it should be.

I've also got the VX-1 and it works great. I was actually using to today for walleye. Its really easy to tell the difference between a 15" walleye and 8" perch. I was in about 12 fow and had the gain set just over one. Just keep expirimenting with some different gain settings, the more practice the easier it gets to read. good luck

I might be having some problems with mine. At times I need to turn my gain up to 3 and over just to get my lure to stay solid. I will give Marcum a call.

How big of a jig and how deep are you fishing? Sometimes I have to crank my gain up to 5 or more when I'm fishing something small like a #16, even when I'm in shallow water. Yesterday I was using a swedish pimple and minnnow which shows up clear as day. Also make sure the transducer is completely under the ice. Sometimes it can reflect of the sides of the hole. Another easy thing to check is for anything thats stuck to the bottom of your transducer, like ice. I usually slosh it in the hole a few times to clean it off before I actually drop it in for a reading. What model flasher do you have?

Thar's really not unusual. I don't know the science behind it, but there are times when I have to as well. I've got an LX-3 by the way. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you're not having to crank it up to 5 or higher on a consistent basis.

One example of when I've had to crank mine up a ways (5 or so) is when I'm fishing two holes and the hole without the transducer is just on the border, so to speak, of where the cone is. Cranking up the gain a bit will usuallly bring the second jig into view. Hope this helps a little.
