If you can light up the water with a lamp or lantern you can get them pretty good actually. My brother in law does it all the time but keep your ears open for machines going by.

This may help?
From what I read dont belive perch are night biters. I Belive they split up from there group and go shallow towards shore at night, sink to bottom and sleep. Then first thing in morning they group up and continue feeding throughout the day.

I went out early Tuesday around 1:30am to SANG barracks and hit the crappie pretty good. Ended up with 16 keepers caught about 35. three 12" and the rest 8-10.

25 years ago i used to go out on saginaw bay (bayport)after work. fished from 2:30 am till 6:00 AM..we used to hammer the perch in 12 foot of water.
buddy and i would each put out a coleman lantern and cut 2 holes each and sometimes it was hard to keep up.also caught a few smelt..
how many lanterns would you actually need to light up the water though? over by metro is shallow and I caught some nice ones at night.

Do you go out from Selfridge or is that gate closed? Do you have a lantern on in your shanty? thanks in advance.

Perch do bight at night, but can't see in the dark. I read in a book a few years back that they have horrible night vision unlike their relatives the walleye. But if you light up the area so they can see you can get them. One of the best ways is to drill a hole halfway through and set the lantern in their. The lamp will illuminate the ice and the water under it pretty nicely. Try to do it with two lamps on either side of your fishing holes.

The gates were left open all night. I had no problems with anyone saying anything. I had two lanterns.

I've done well on gills and crappies at night. There were just about always some perch mixed in too. I fished mostly in canals, used 3 lanterns(because I had 3). It was hit or miss just like day fishing, gills were better than average after dark though.

Before it gets too dark I set a lantern and spotlight on the ice. I rig up my poles with glow tear drops and use lively minnows under a bobber. If the spot produced fish during the day, the bigger perch will still hit up to dark. Dark meaning when you can not see at all in the hole. I been staying out till about 7pm these past few days and caught them up to that time than they are done.
