Injured ice fisherman rescued on Lake Erie
BONO, Ohio — Eight Jerusalem Township rescue workers yesterday walked more than 2˝ miles on Lake Erie’s thin, thawing ice near Crane Creek State Park to rescue an ice fisherman with an injured leg or ankle, authorities said.
The fisherman, Jim Ledford, was flown to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where a hospital official said last night that she had no information on a patient by that name.
Mr. Ledford was fishing with a friend about noon when he twisted his right ankle and fell on the ice, township Fire Chief Don Murray said.
Paramedics and emergency medical technicians, who were called about 12:25 p.m., spent about 35 minutes walking from shore to the victim on ice that was only 2 inches thick in spots. “It wasn’t a straight walk out,” Chief Murray said of the area that is about 5 miles east of Bono near the Lucas-Ottawa county line.
The workers pulled the victim back to shore in a sled designed for medical rescues.
As they walked back, they could tell the ice had deteriorated in the warm sun even in the short time they were out. Coast Guard Station Toledo assisted the township rescue workers in the final 300 feet of the walk back, about 2:45 p.m., Chief Murray said.
