Fair Haven is for all the sled yahoos that want to show off and get hurt and maybe lose their machines in the ice. Paint ball gun is locked and loaded next time there won't be yelling and screaming it'll be nitro fed paint balls comn at ya.

I'm kinda with SS06 on this one,, except it's wind-sailers and not sleds where were at. These jackazzzes are "slaloming" through the shantys out there at Gino's. Last week, I watched one knucklehead zing through within 10 yards of a guy on a bucket:dizzy:. This guy was hauling azzz,, one quick gust of wind in the other direction and the guy on the bucket woulda been skewered.:tdo12:

I'll add my .02. Last week out in FH there was an idiot in a car doing doughnuts on the ice. Within 100 yards of shore in front of the Raft and by the DNR site. Now it was during the week so of course the volume of people was way down, but come on.....:rant::rant:

I forgot that I had a phone with me, next time I am calling 911, can't believe that reckless driving is allowed on the lake, although maybe it is. Obviously there is no speed limit.

*******s like you give paintball a bad name. Why cant you just throw snow or rock filled slush balls like everyone else. Also "nitro" is short for nitrogen which is nothin but compressed air.....nothin' special

I have to agree w SS06. Had one ice boater come within 25 feet of me. And the Number of fools traveling at excess speed on the sleds reminded me of why I do not like to ice fish anymore. No respect. I can only fish weekends which makes it worse. Yes the lake is for everyone but have some respect for the others who do not "share" your death wishes. Also, the guys that are moving their shanties and scouting on the ATVs are almost as bad. Had them cruise by just as close....

I am with SS on this one too, except I was fishing on the bay. Had some yahoo racing back and forth right through all of the spearing shanties. We stopped him, and very politely told him we don't mind you racing around, but if you could just go outside the group of shanties a little bit so you are not bothering the fisherman. His response was, "I can do whatever the FU*$ I want." (this coming from a 35-45 year old man) He whipped his snowmobile sideways on the ice and blew snow/slush all over my dad who has alot of health problems and if he would have fallen, it could have been trouble. I am thinking that the reckless use of snowmobiles or four wheelers could also come under the harrassment rule. I agree with Rober Hoover, get the license number if you can and call the DNR. Taking matters into your own hands can lead to many more problems. I remember years ago on a lake up north, ice fishermen were having problems with drunken snow mobilers tearing down their shanties at night after the bars closed. The ice fishermen one night buried steel stakes around a couple of the shanties and when the snowmobiles went out one Friday after the bars closed one of them hit one of the stakes and the guy ended up in the hospital for a couple of months. Investigations could not prove who put out the stakes but whoever did it could have been in serious trouble. Thank goodness I am retired and do not have to put with the weekend outings. They have the right to use the lake like ice fishermen do but with such a large body of water to utilize why do they have to do it around people.

Fyi, someone can indeed get a reckless driving ticket in a motor vehicle on a lake. Reckless driving is "any willfull and wantun disregard for public safety on any roadway, stream, pond, or FROZEN LAKE that is generally accessable to the public.

P.S. Those are the only tickets I actually like to write for people. I wouldn't recommend the paintball idea. It sounds a lot cooler than it would be if someone gets hurt. You never know if one of those idiots on the quads has a ccw permit and is carrying a gun. Believe me people think they have to carry a gun everywhere.

I recommend just calling the local police/ sherriff's department non emergency, and reporting such behavior. They will be out there within minutes, and they will help.

Let's all get back to having a good time out there and catching enough fish for a fish fry.

good luck,

Ralph Smith

I agree with the flagging him down and talking idea. Maybe start with " nice sled, can I get a pic of it" and out comes the camera or phone to get the registration number with him on it. Then might want to let him know they can find him at home if his stupid sh** contiues.

This issue will never be solved. I agree with everything I've read and I really think we're all helpless on this. You might take the time, get the law involved and 10 minutes later the next clown starts up....

The only time it really gets me going is when the kids are with me and I feel like their safety is at risk. I will say this though; even though it's mostly the sport riders causing the issue, I've seen ice fisherman with sleds / quads doing the same stuff. People now a days feel a false sense of entitlement. They think about only themselves and treat the lake like it's their private pond. I wish there was someway to work this out but I don't see the end of this one.

I agree I was at SANG and was set up all by myself, I guess there is something about shanties that these azzes think they have to get as close and going as fast as they can. Empty 1lb propane tanks work well. I believe these guys are the same ones that ride the jet skis in the summer, O well that 1lb pyramids and old snagging pols are good for.

Im a fisherman and I dont have a machine but what I can say is, the lake belongs to all citizens of Michigan. Ask the riders once to stop driving reckless near your shanty and then if it happens again call the law with the numbers on the machine and a good description. Theres a pretty good chance the guys on the machines will stay away from you. It makes no sense to get yourself a charge of assault or even felonious assault trying to beat a dead horse. Id bet half of the guys driving recklessly on there machines have been drinking allday and an OWI on a sled or orv has the same ramnifications as on the road in your vehicle. It was a zoo out their this weekend and there will always be a#$holes on both sides of the fence, so lets all try to have some respect both ways and enjoy the ice while it lasts. This is a never ending circle every year though and we'll probably hear it again next monday.

Anyone who knows anything about fishing anchorbay or the fairhaven knows the place is going to be a circus of quad riders, snow machine racing or cars/trucks out on the ice driving around.I dont agree with how reckless they are but I can say I have had the experience of any near misses or close calls. If I fish there its during the weekdays mostly and definately not saturdays.I fished there yesterday and was off the ice by noon because I knew with it being a nice day what was going to happen. As for solving the problem it probaly never will be cause theres just isnt enough dnr and law inforcement around all the time.Shooting them with paintballs isnt the right approach to take either.

02-25-2008, 12:52 PM
Now I both fish and ride snowmobiles. I abide by all of the laws as written in the state handbook for lawful operation of snowmobiles around people. I have been guilty and ridden too close too fast to a guy if he is fishing right on the side of the river, or if they are out there in the dark. If I was the one to be shot by your paintball, I could gaurantee that your fishing stuff as well as some of your other assets would be sitting in my garage after I got done suing you. Its best not to take the law into your own hands, it just gets messy.

I agree with SS on this one also. I was out at Crocker on Saturday afternoon and there were several "careless" guys out there riding around on sleds. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy riding snomobiles just like the next guy, but when I am sitting in a shanty and one speeds by at 50mph less then 10 feet from me I tend to get a bit pi**ed off. There is a whole lake out there to ride on and these idiots insist on swerving in and out of all the shanties out there. Not cool!

I ride fast snowmobiles and ice fish, but agree with the basic premise of this thread. It's just not safe sitting in a portable shanty or on a bucket with some drunk cowboys racing 100 MPH around fishermen, sometimes with blowing snow reducing visibility.

Years ago on an inland lake one of them killed himself hitting a block of ice right next to a shanty cut from a spearing shed. I like snowmobiles, but keep the crazy stuff and insane behavior far away from fishermen.

Yes. I have a right to bear arms, and it's perfectly legal. A gun of some sort goes with me anywhere it's legal under the CCW. I was trying to exemplify a point and hopefully save someone from doing something stupid. I am sorry I joined this site. So far I have found people here to be both presumptious and judgemental. First, I agree with the "Don't use the paintball gun" comment. I agree that it'll get you in heaps of trouble.

That being said...

People zooming through shanties at high speeds are endangering lives. Imagine if you had a kid that came out from behind a shanty at the wrong time, etc.

This is a problem that will simply esclate. I've been lucky enough to not have to deal with this, but I know what lengths I would go to, to protect my friend's and family's saftey...

I love to open it up on my sled on the ice, but at a distance far enough from anglers and other riders. It is just common sense. You wouldn't take a dirt bike and race up and down a beach around people. Common now.
