I was out at cotton today...and saw a few fisherman using a really neat technique. Some of you may have seen them. It seems they were targeting panfish in the shallows. Both of them fished....standing up...with a long rod. They would put their bait in the hole and start with the rod tip high,slowly...and i mean slowly...dropping the tip of the rod just above the ice. I was standing outside watching for around 30 minutes[i wasnt catching squat].....and one guy caught a fish on EVERY drop for what seemed like 10 minutes...probably 8-9 fish. The part i found amusing was they both had the same exact stance....one foot forward..holding the butt of the rod around chest level. It was like a choreographed dance. I saw one guy walk up....and try talking to them...but they seemed busy CATCHING FISH. Anyway...neat to see a few guys slapping some fish around while the rest of us just stood and watched:lol::lol::lol::lol::fish::fish::fish:

I dont use along rod, but use that technique quite a bit fishing gills and crappie. Me and 2 buddies limited out on gills today again. Had to find them this time. They are in there thick. I caught 1 on every drop for about an hour straight. Spikes on a ratfinki. Pink was the hot color. 5 fow. No crappie this time. Did see a few on the camera but just cruised on by.
Alot of the time fish will hit on the drop and also feed up. Slowly doing this allows for a longer drop. I found it to be great for crappie. The other day, the crappie seemed to be suspending above the gills so starting it up top and slowly dropping it got the crappie almost every time they were on the camera. It also works great for spooky fish. if you drop your bait down quick it often spooks them. Slowly lowering it gets the bait down without spooking them. Try it sometime! Works great!

i've fished like that since i was young, saw an old man doing something similar and was in the same position as you, watched him slaughter the fish. i learned fast what to do.
wednesday was great for me as well, got a bunch of big ones 10 and 11 inchers. since then, nothing even close. seemed like they were all over. went out friday and saturday, and didn't catch anything worth cleaning.

I don't stand when I jig for gills, but pretty much use the same technique from a sitting position. It works well on crappie and gills, but I use it for perch as well.

I use this technique all the time . When I hole jump , thats how you find the fish . Have to fish all depths if you cant the bite and this method definitly helps .

:yeahthat: I use this meathod for gills, crappie and perch, but I use a shorter rod when I sit.

I'll never forget fishing off my godparents dock at Grand Lake of the Cherokees in Oklahoma as a young kid. The water was clear down to 20', usually dirty most years, but I could see a piece of plywood suspend at a 45 degree angle against the steep bank about 10' down. Many attempts to lure whatever was hiding underneath the plywood when pulling a small crank bait across in front of the plywood failed. I switched to a small jig, cast it right on top of the plywood, and reeled it off the edge. As soon as it started dropping, a huge crappie slammed it from under the wood and I had a nice fight before it ended up in the frying pan for lunch. An old timer at the lake told me the drop mimicks the action of a minnow/food wounded and falling through the water, making an easy meal for a preditor...
