I was hooking them gills, but would lose 'em on the way up.
So i had the bright idea of sharpening the hook..not possible..dumb idea.
So i replaced the tear drop with another just like it and it made all the difference..starting putting fish on the ice.
I had liked my teardrop type, but over time it went dull on me..duh.

you can re-sharpen tear drops. i do it all the time. only time i throw them out is when paint chips off.
try bending the hook out a little..this helps hook setting a lot:)

Actually,
you can sharpen teardrops, I do mine before each season.
I use small pieces of sharpening stones about 1/16th of an inch square and about two inches long-works great. Got them from a machine shop.
I hope this helps.
Personally I have about had it, with guys sitting on jump street waiting to spew demeaning post on people seeking info.
You walk around carrying monikers of "Michigan Sportsman" just because you subscribe to a website with no screening process and then you act like inconsiderate thugs. IMO
Michigan -YES- Sportsman by definition; a person whose conduct and attitude exhibit sportsmanship????
Definition of sportsmanship- Conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit, and grace in losing.
So before you post consider what it takes to be defined, who you profess to be.
I realize some folks on here truly are, sportsman. It just seems that more and more people only have smart***** answers to offer.
Since I am on a rant and going to upset the masses I don't think that "yeah that" should even be considered a post. Jethro Bodine could have done better. Once again just my opinion.
Btw. I am a hunt and peck typist but I try to take the time to be concise.
It is not a website, a hat or a community, its a way of life.

When you bend the hooks out does it result it more fish hooked but then lost on the way up? i would think that it would allow the fish to spit the hook a little easier while fighting. I missed a ton of bites fishing gills last night and had some that i hooked and emmediatly lost. I may have to try opening up the gap of the hook a bit.

I have a small stone with a groove in it for sharpening hooks. Most times just running the back side of the point (the side opposite the barb) down the groove, bend side first, a couple of times will sharpen the hook. They sell 'em in tackle stores I believe they still call 'em "hook hones".

As long as you keep pressure on em it shouldn't be a problem. Some jigs it seems to help a LOT to open it up a little.

From what I've been told if your hook won't slightly catch on your fingernail, at like a 45 degree angle, then you need to sharpen. I've got a stone that's about half the size of a pen and has a groove on one side. Run the point up and down this groove a couple of times and you have a brand new hook!

The best thing to use for sharpening teardrops is and emery board that a woman used for her fingernails. They are cheap, lightweigt, flexible and have both a coarse and a fine side. A couple of them fit in a shirt pocket.

I agree emery board have quite a few uses more then just womens nails...
I thought about bending out my hooks also but was afraid the fish might spit tit out easier I guess I try one and see...

I tape a small piece of waterproof emery cloth (fine sandpaper) to the corners of my tackle boxes for quick hook sharpening.;)
