ive been out on chemung twice in the last week and both times the ice cracked in between my legs. i could hear it coming from the other side of the lake pinging and dinging. then when it gets closer you hear the actual cracking. the worst part is when you can feel the ice move underneath your feet when it cracks!
the first day i drilled one hole graphed fish dropped a line and the fish started biting immidiately. then the ice cracked right through my hole and then inbetween my legs. i moved about 15' over and drilled another hole only to have it happen again. then all around my little area i could hear the ice cracking. there was 10 inches + of ice so i wasnt scared but needless to say my nerves were shot and i couldnt concentrate so i left.
this morning after my sons basketball game we stopped on the way home. same thing after about 15 minutes into it. the fish started biting and the ice started cracking. first one came from across the lake again straight through my hole and separated 1/4 inch right between my legs. then i moved over 15 ft and it cracked the other direction this time criss crossing right behind me. i tried to ignore it but as i sat there it sent another crack connecting the two criss crossing cracks together right in front of me making a triangle so i was sitting on a broken off piece of ice:SHOCKED:. needless to say we left right then and there.
i wish that didnt happen. i havent filled a bucket in awhile.

I was out on my lake this morning and it was cracking all over the place. You could hear it. You could see it. You could feel it.
I could not figure it out. What was different about today from all the recent days that the ice was totally quiet? It was maybe 20 - 25 degrees, so you are right Spitfire, it was not melting. Making ice? Well, yeah, but.....
.... why all the cracking now, but not those other days below freezing? Beats me.
Well, it was really sunny and bright. That's somethign we haven't seen in awhile. But that doesn't tell me anything. How about you?
nothing like sitting on St. clair a mile out and having the ice raise up a couple inches while your in your shanty:yikes:happened to me a few weeks ago..and the sound and feel of it had me bouncing up off my bucket.......and ready to head to shore.....without my gear!:tdo12:

Theres enough ice there you could drive a tank out there, expanding and contracting of the ice always causing it to crack and moan,I still hate though when the cracks go right through the hole!!

after all the wind for the preceding 2-3 days the ice will be settleing back down and with the temp below freezing it will be making new ice. was talking loud on Indian lake also. It's called pucker factor:yikes:. as long as its cold and making noise it's safe
