Ruger New Model Blackhawk Single Six 357 Mag. 6 1/2 " barrel.
I have 2 of'em. A friend of mine built me a custom, hand tooled leather quick draw rig that is a work of art if anyone is looking to have one made. Very reasonable too. :)
Anyway, These twins shoot right on at 40 yards, haven't shot beyond that.
What is the killing power of these pistols on deer and at what range ?
Thanks for the info in advance guys.

...What is the killing power of these pistols on deer and at what range ?...
I have the "convertible" version of that Blackhawk that includes cylinders for both 357 mag and 9mm. I use Winchester 180gr Supreme Partition Gold factory ammo (357 mag) in it for deer.
I've always been advised to utilize the 357 mag like it's "a loud bow" and keep shots within 40 yards. After hunting with it for a few seasons and killing a couple of deer, I think that's pretty good advice that I will continue to stick to.
(Your results may vary ;))

If you stick to heavy for caliber bullets, and stay in the 50 yard range you'll be fine. I'm sure someone will jump in here and say that they shoot moose at 900 yards with theirs and thats fine but for us mortals that have to live with the laws of physics the range mentioned is good. There are much better calibers for deer in a handgun but it will do the job. I always reccomend .41 mag and bigger when asked. I used a .44 mag for a few years and was happy with the performance.

I've taken three deer with my Dan Wesson 357, played around with loads some but found out that factory deer 180gr. rounds shoot best. My advice is keep youn shots broadside, 30, 40, 50 yards whatever, if you want a pass though anyway.

so a .357 would be a good "back up" gun for deer hunting, you know when you are out walking around and see a deer but dont have the time to get the long gun out. Also would it be good for a finish shot? Just trying to get some ideas

You need one of these. Also doubles for taking out the garbage or walking the dog.
