BECOMING AN OUTDOORS-WOMAN PROGRAM SCHEDULED FOR UPPER PENINSULA

LANSING--Here's an opportunity for women to step outside
with confidence. Registrations now are being accepted for
the Department of Natural Resources Upper Peninsula Becoming
an Outdoors-Woman program scheduled for May 19-21, in Big
Bay, about 30 miles north of Marquette, on the shore of Lake
Superior.
Becoming an Outdoors-Woman is an award-winning outdoor
skills program that teaches introductory hunting and
shooting skills, fishing and other outdoor activities in a
supportive, non-threatening atmosphere. Nationally, 10,000
women each year are given the opportunity to learn from
patient and enthusiastic instructors at BOW workshops.
"BOW is for women who may never have participated in outdoor
activities but always have hoped for an opportunity to
learn," said Lynn Marla, DNR BOW Coordinator. "It's also a
great way for women to improve their skills, learn new
activities or even enjoy the company of like-minded
individuals."
The U.P. BOW weekend will be held at the beautiful Bay Cliff
Health Camp, in Big Bay, where courses covering more than
two dozen types of outdoor activities will be taught by
skilled professionals in a natural, yet very comfortable
setting. Principle workshops will offer instruction in fly
fishing, canoeing and kayaking, handgun shooting and nature
photography. Other courses will cover mountain biking and
bike maintenance, hiking, carving fish decoys, camp cooking,
waterfowl hunting and more.
Women, 18 or older, are eligible to attend this three-day
workshop, which also will offer a gear-up show sponsored by
Cabela's of Nebraska, a study of the night sky and an up-
close review of the Michigan moose population, plus many
special surprises.
The cost for the U.P. program is $125, which includes all
meals and dorm-style lodging, equipment and supplies. The
registration deadline is May 1. To obtain a registration
form, contact Ann Wilson, Department of Natural Resources,
Marquette, at 906-228-6561; e-mail: wilsoann@state.mi.us. A
$50 deposit must accompany all completed registrations.
Many other women's programs are scheduled this year across
Michigan as part of the coalition of "Outdoor Programs for
Michigan Women" which includes the Department of Natural
Resources, Michigan State University Department of Fisheries
and Wildlife and the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. To
learn more about these additional opportunities, contact
Lynn Marla at 517-241-2225; e-mail: marlal@state.mi.us, or
