Does anyone know here where to obtain aerial photos? Also, how many acres are respresented on a "typical" photo? Looking to hunt state land in Tuscola County during firearm deer season. Thanks for any help!
Great site, BTW!

Welcome to the site Polkahero !
You're right, this is an AWESOME site.
I don't think they're available for every location but head on over to mapquest.com. A lot of the maps I bring up there have a tab at the top that says "Aerial photo". Just click on it and it'll show up. You can even zoom in quite a bit also. I'm amazed but when I look up my address I can bring up the aerial photo and zoom in close enough to see my neighbors pool ! It's pretty cool.

Thanks for the tips! I tried Mapquest but couldn't find anything.
However, I did a search on the Web and found a kicka** site called Terraserver. The area I'm looking to scout came up immediately! You can also view a topo map as well! I highly recommend Terraserver.com.

That terraserver site rocks!! It is very helpful for scouting! I used it to scout the swamp and find potholes where ducks could hide.
200th post...yippee!

polkahero,
How did you look up your property on terraserver? Did you use lat & long and if so exactly how did you enter coordinates? I can't seem to get the right combination entered

Hey guys,
Terrasever, http://www.terraserver.microsoft.com is great. What I do is type in the nearest city or town, then use familarity with roads, etc. to find the exact spot I am looking for.
Also the Michigan DNR has aerial imagery available in "Mr. Sid" format, which requires a free viewer which you download. Here is the link to the DNR imagery page http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10371_14546---,00.html
I like to make my own composite maps, including:
- state land ownership
- topography
- aerial imagery
- local trail maps (if available)
All of the above are available from the DNR, then you have to be a little creative with the "print screen" function on your computer and imaging software, such as Paint Shop Pro or PhotoShop. What you end up with is a multi-layer map containing the maximum possible information.
Add to this your own markings for where you have seen scrapes, rubs and beds and you have the makings of a super scouting map.
p.s. Some people even combine topographical and aerial info with 3D terrain data to create a 3D shaded image of their area. Check this out------> http://www.terrainmap.com/rm21.html . Pretty cool stuff.

Rupe,
Not sure what you mean. Is that like an Eagles Club or something? If so, no I'm not.
Thanks, kroppe, for all the DNR information. Haven't downloaded anything yet but looks like that might be high-quality stuff.
Does anyone know what a stereoscope is and where I might find one? They're supposed to aid in studying aerial photos.

The Polish Falcons Of America is an organization much like Fraternal Order of Eagles, KofC, Moose, and others. We have two clubs or "nests" is Saginaw. Your screen name (Polkahero) kinda got me wonderin'.
