and tell me where you would look for fish. I have been out numerous times looking for the 'gills in this lake. X marks many of the spots that I have tried. Most places I have marked no fish on my Marcum and have caught next to nothing. A couple of the spots along the west side and north end I have found small perch - I mean tiny. But no perch of any size and not a single bluegill all winter (or last winter), even though I catch nice 'gills here on the soft water. Where do they go in winter?

By the way, almost nobody fishes through the ice here because open water in the channels makes it impossible to get here from the public accesses on the adjacent lakes. I might see 1 or 2 guys out here a couple of times all winter.

how is the vegetation on the north east end of the lake? looks like some good ledges there. find the weeds and find the 'gills!

i'd stake out in front of that cove in SE corner just above and east of area 7. parallel wtht the points and then into the cove near the drop off mark to deeper water.

I'd go to spot 6 hands down. Underwater humps concentrate large numbers of just about any species in the winter time. I fish underwater humps whenever I can find them and do very well for big perch, pike, and walleye especially. My favorite underwater humps will rise to about 8 or 10 ft and drop down on all sides to 30-50 ft. For perch and walleye, I hit the 25-28 ft of water off the sides of the hump and go a few feet shallower for the pike.

I was thinking of trying spot 6 next myself. Spot 7 sure looks good also. I will have to see if I can get to it safely. The river current comes up from the south through the channel so I am not sure I can get to 7. I will have to get closer to see if it is accessible from the main lake.

I sure appreciate your input. I have challenged myself to find the fish on this lake - and so far the fish are winning!

There are summertime weeds pretty much all around the perimiter of the lake out to maybe 10 foot (I am guessing on the depth).

I am fishing both mid-day and late afternoon, say 3-5pm. Maybe not the best times?

i fish that lake a lot in the summer. my cousin has a spot at waffle farm there. i catch quite a few gills at the spot labeled 6 there. this is in the summer, but it shouldnt matter too much. also, try right next to the docks on the west side of the lake.

also quite a few pike at spot 5, pretty much where you were set up at 3 times. try some tip ups.

I third the other posts...right by spot 6 all around that underwater island. That's the first place I would head. I would probably start to the left of the island there is a nice drop into the 45ft...gotta be weeds somewhere around the island.

that whole bottom around spot 6 should be weeds. i did some drop shot for bass there, and remember pulling up weeds with my line.

:yeahthat: First thing that caught my eye. The hump at 6, and the point southeast of it.

I'd have to go with the southeast portion, east of that 10ft. point at about 15-17ft. of water,it looks like a nice flat area for bluegills to feed on what they can find.
Or west side of the same point 15-17ft of water.
I know all lakes are differant but the two lakes I fish, that is the depth the gills are at.

I agree with you guys on spot 6. I would definetly puch some holes down the outside drop offs. Start working your way off the shelf with a good eye on your electronics. In minnesota we used to catch a ton of gills suspended just below or with the crappies in the same water. 30-40 feet. Alot of times the will suspend at or just below the depth of the hump or flat they are off the edge of in the 30-40 fow. Its alot of water to cover as they may be suspended from 10-30 feet down so your flasher is your best way to find them! Good luck to ya!

I agree. I would try deep water and look for fish suspended high in the water column over a weed bed.
