Fished Higgins over the weekend with a Guide Bob Stockton from Higgins lake! Did well between 2 of us we caught 13 and kept 6 that were between 5 and 11 pounds! Saturday night we rented a shanty from the same guy and caught close to 175 smelt! Used smelt for bait for the lakers we used tip ups and jigged for them also taking fish both ways!

We were running the jigs clean! Bob says gotta keep it moving really fast and bait slows it down too much!

Never fished Higgins, mostly the bigger lakes to the west. What were you using for jigs, pimples, blasters, ??

Thank you for the welcome! Just uploaded photos of the catch! Ice where we were was around 10-12 inches and little snow but some decent drifts nothing to worry about though. And for jigs we were using his hand made jigs, something similar to a rapala!

Look at a map of higgins and try to find steep drops or small pools of deep water around shallow flats!

if you go on mapquest and use the arial photo feature you can see the holes and drops pretty well.

I caught 2 lakers on saturday and 3 on sunday! Bob let me smelt fish with him Sunday night and got to see some of his clients catchs on his way in from laker fishing and they kept there limits, decent fish 6 to 8 pounds! plus one nice rainbow about 5 pounds. Fishing in the rain on Sunday was tough but it was not a bad weekend!
