West wind to 40 mph! Use your Big Head and think about ice flows! Heck I'd even think about Big Cracks or little cracks getting bigger!

A cadillac is a nice ride, but it's useless without a road to drive it on...
Go fish an inland lake if you really need to get your string stretched today.

Wait until you get older and your circulation gets so bad you can't feel your fingers to bait or retie. Then you are forced to either give up a sport that is in your blood and you love, or fish in a shanty. You may be surprized to find which one you chose to do.

If it was , I apolegize for being rude. It just rubbed me the wrong way. I have fished without a shanty for 43 years. It's just the last two that I am forced to use one. The clue came a couple years ago when I baited my spoon with my finger tip instead of the minnow.

As I try to learn from the experienced fisherman, your hint about new bait was interesting. When you used your finger for bait, which one of your fingers was it? Did you catch anything? How deep of water where you in?:lol::lol:
BTW, I'm pretty sure the crack about sissy was a joke, as is the above.

I guess I just needed that second cup of coffee, as PerchOnly's comments got me laughing. And I did take the "sissy" comment to heart....You don't know how much I detest fishing in that damn little box ! I would much rather be outside, But faced with the shanty or giving up on a passion, I'll take the box ! Sorry again guys, I'm really not on here to make enemys.

I would almost prefer fishing outside instead of a shanty is this weather. I was in mine last year and the wind was howling like today. It almost made me "sea sick." The rattling of the material and swaying of the shed made me want to puke.

Being an Old Timer myself:
It ain't the circulation that bothers me, it's seein' that fine line when I got to retie, lining the line and that little hook eye up takes a knack through bifocals(one that I haven't seemed to master yet).  Any breeze makes that task even more difficult.
So it's in the Trap or the Shack for me.

I was on Big Bradford a few yrs. ago in a wind like this, my buddy got out of his shanty to take a pee, one minute he was behind his shanty the next he was standing in the open and his shanty was headed for Waters:yikes:, he had to take the truck to the north end of the lk. maybe a mile away and ask to cross some peoples back yard to get it heater, chair, bait bucket, fish finder everything, the site of him chasing it up the lk. still makes me cry, the beer was in his shanty. It was at that moment I drilled my augar into the ice and tied mine down and then designed my anchors. Mike

And your comment shows a lack of sense of humor. Apologize or not it seems every thread lately has someone who is either bitter or somewhat rude....its gettin old. By the way...Stewie Griffin is the most mature infant you will ever meet. Im gonna go play on my swingset now.

I would much rather be in a nice warm shanty rather than freezing my you know what off.And IF and when the fish really get going you can end up with some very cold hands real quick when you are rebaiting and pulling up fish one after another without being able to put your gloves/mittens on once in a while. Call me a sissy I don't care:DOnce you start fishing out of a shanty for a few years I think your blood starts to thin.I wonder how the heck I stayed out there when I was younger. One drawback is you are not as mobile if you need to make alot of moves in a day.

To all those brave souls who were out on the bay Sunday did any happen to catch my black trash can and lid? The wind got a hold of it and the next thing I knew it was headed for Strawberry Island!

"brave souls" is an interesting term to describe them. Unless you were in a canal or a bay that had an on shore wind then I would say "moron" is a much better word to describe them. 20+ mph sustained winds out of the west along with some pockets of open water off shore equals a coast guard chopper ride home and given all ice fishermen a bad name in the public eye. I know brandenberg already blew out, hopefully the rest will hold.

Last year on st. clair my buddy got out to take a leak and i was still sitting in the shanty. All of a sudden i was flying across the lake and couldn't do a damn thing about it! Very possibly the funniest thing that has ever happened to me on the ice and it was actualy kind of a fun ride. I now have a set of ice anchors....

:DOld people are cool. Using a finger for a bait now that is a new one.
It sucks that I have to put on stronger glases to see the eye hole:dizzy:. I actually bought another set up so i did not have to retie. "Learned that from a guy so old he farted dust"

I went out yesterday, all day. 9a-7p. But I found an inland lake to go to. It was still cold and the wind was so bad that at times I had to put my boot in the hole to keep from blowing across the lake. No lie. Caught 30 gills, nothing on the flag. I've got a cheap Frabill and I had to keep clearing the hole inside the shanty. But if I had to do it again, I would. I now no that I can withstand sub-zero temperatures with wind chills under-20. So as far as I'm concerned, if theres ice, I'm fishing and the weather can kiss my .....!!!
