you better get permission from landowners before you do...

Do you have a specific question of just looking for basic knowledge?

There are actually 3 different laws that can pertain to hunting dogs. They are the 1919 Dog Law, the Wildlife Conservation Act, and the Animal Cruelty Act. The Wildlife Conservation Act can be found on the MI-DNR site, and the other two can be found either trhough the State of Michigan website or Goggle. The Dog Law is more directed to general dog requirements. The Wildlife Conservation Act has information regarding the use of dogs for hunting. The Animal Cruelty Law discusses definitions of lost or abandoned and/or mistreated dogs.

Basically what I want to know is doesn't someone need permission to run a dog across your property? Does it violate any tresspassing laws if they do not have permission in advance? I know that they are allowed to retrieve a dog so long as they are not carrying a weapon without permission. Last Friday someone ran 3 dogs through my property. They were gone before I got dressed and got outside but my wife said they came back through 2 more times after I had left for work.

To start on your property yes. If started someplace else and they run onto it NOPE! The owners are allowed to retrive the dog as you said. You also have the right to deny permission a second time or later if you tell the owners in advance. After doing so the people are NOT allowed on your land to retrive the dogs even if the dogs are in sight. Burden of this proof falls on you.

This is the biggest problem facing bear and coyote hunting with dogs now.

So basically as long as they start their dogs somewhere else they can keep running through my property as often as they want?

Pretty much sums it up. They will tell you the dogs cannot read the no trespassing signs. Still check into this a bit farther because I'm not fully sure what this part of the law is. I got ride of my coonhounds in the 80's.

I don't know on repeating offences if warned you can have the owner ticked for the dogs on your place. Two years ago some dogs got shot on the west side of the state by a upset land owner who had this same problem. He took matter into his own hands and killed the dogs. He ended up in court paying for this.

Same thing with a fellow in Atlanta a few years back and he ended up paying $7,000.
