1. James - so practical (ie. what is faith without works?)
2. NASB - literal translation that is easy to understand

NIV study bible. Like the footnotes, helps explain if I don't understand the scripture.

Also, a pastor just bought a bible translated from Hebrew by a Messinic (sp) Jew, very interesting. I like looking up the Hebrew words sometimes. The meaning seems much more different. Somone pointed out to me the translations from the Greek words usually were more philosophical (example, the Roman and Greek empires) versus the Hebrew translation.

1. My favorite book would also have to be James. It's an "in your face" look at how Christians should live on a daily basis. James is the "no holds bared" author that puts real faith on the line!

2. I stick to the old but good KJV. It may be tough for some to understand, but its what I memorized as a child and what our church uses to keep the standard of unity in both teaching and preaching. I also feel its what God preserved for English speaking people over hundreds of years thus I feel its the best for me.

I like a few, so James, Psalms, to start.
I use the Wolmans of faith study Bible in the NIV version.
