I usually dump my spent grains out in the back yard and the deer never touch them. Which has always surprised me. You would think they would love the sweet sugary grains. Maybe they're too sweet?

Anyway, I did a Rye IPA on Sunday and threw the grains out back and last night I had 5 deer munchin' on the pile. With less food around, they must be a little less picky this time of year.

Sure would like to know how this rye IPA turns out-I'm planning on trying one as soon as I can get the brewery out side to clean it up.
What percent of rye was in your grain bill?
I can't think of any commercial brands to use for comparison.
Let us know

I’ve noticed in the fall, when the deer are bulking up for winter, they’ll eat spent grains after the grains have sat for a few days and dried out.

In the winter they clean them up that night. My theory is, after spraging there isn’t much sugar or nutrients left in the spent grain.

My son tells me spent grains are great for composting.

The Rye IPA grain bill was something like this:
11.5 lbs 2-Row
3 lbs Rye (Not flaked)
1 lbs Crystal 60
.5 lb Wheat
4-5 handfulls of rice hulls

1 oz Millenium 14.0% 60 min
1 oz Columbus 4.8% 60 min
.5 oz Columbus 4.8% 30 min
1.5 oz Columbus 4.8% 0 min

I used White Labs - American Ale Blend (I've never used this yeast. It says it's very similar to the California ale yeast)

It started at 1.072 which was right around my target gravity. My efficiency was a little low - 61%. I boiled off a little more then I wanted. I was shooting for 5.5 gallons but ended up with around 5.

If you go to the Northern Brewer forum, this is basically the much talked about Denny's Rye IPA with a few changes.

Yea -I've read the reviews off the tasty brew and nortern brewer forums but was hopeing for something other than the "old boy's" review,
your's does look close to DC's other than subing columbus for Mt hood and leaving out dexitrin.
I'd still like to hear your initial thoughts on this beer when finished- I'm probably still 2 or 3 months away from trying this my self.
Thanks

I kegged the Rye IPA last night. I was really happy with the taste. Even the wife said it wasn't too bad. The rye added a great flavor. I would definetly brew this recipe again.

Finish gravity was 1.018. The beer was darker than I expected. I'll post a picture after a few days carbonating.

If anyone's out on Grand Lake (Alpena) this Saturday, stop by the shanty and have a pint or two. Shoot me a PM and I'll let you know where we'll be.
