well i went out from 8 to 1:30, the jumbo's are in... every 15 to 20 mins or so id have 4 or 5 10-12 inchers in the hole. i had the steel w/ me and they went tight lipped. so i chucked the spear a good 2 dz times this am, and i missed every time:lol: this was the first time i ever got to throw my spear. got it 3 seasons ago... i caught a few smaller ones, bout 9 or 10 inch's only 7 so i tossed em back. had i stuck afew fatties, then id be happy. they came in fast and hard on a dead minnow hooked through the belly and dropped in the hole for a dead fall. i was using ficious classic chartruce bug eye for that. as soon as i dropped the dead one down they came from all sides and as soon as the minnow stopped falling, they just sat there stareing at it till i threw the spear... it was fun day off. gl gang. stay shallow!!! i was somewhere from srr to brandonburg:evil:

Oh, real nice Neil.:16suspect:lol:
I always found that if you had the spear in the water say 6" or so and just gave it some easy effort I did better at spearing them. Don't be chuckin it.:yikes:

Heck, I figured that anyone that is able to master hunting with a macheti would be able to make a pin cushion out of Perch with a spear. :p ;)

Neil,
You will have more luck with your spear if you don't throw it. I made a lead collar for mine(2-3#), since then, all I do is position over the fish and let go. If they are outside of the hole, aim 1 fish underneath the one you see, that's where it really is.
Glad someone is at least seeing big'uns.

Hey Neil
Lower the spear into the water until it is just a little above the fish then give it a smooth "push". Aim just behind the head. You can almost touch the fish sometimes before you release the spear.

Back in the ealry 80's when I had my shanty out on the dropoff at Fair Haven I dropped a gallon jar with minnows half way down. That would keep perch in the hole and you could be selective in the ones you would spear. I had a long shaft on my spear so all I had to do was jab em.

Just curious , Is'nt it easier to catch perch on a jig rather than spearing them? Seems like spearing perch would kinda be a waste of time . Also , a perch is not a big fish . Even a big perch is still small in a sense . Would'nt you ruin alot of meat on the fish by shoving a spear through it ? I never tried it , just doesnt seem like a logical way of catchin a perch . Have fun with that !!!!

Stabbed 4 jumbos with the spear yesterday afternoon at Cotton Road. Ended up with about 15 nice fish total. Walked past the crowd into about 7 fow. I had a few misses yesterday too. It took me a while to get going with the spear in the beginning. I think I was throwing it too hard also. Once you get one and realize how easily the spear will go through the fish, you'll be fine. Just hurry up and get the first one out of the way.

I think that it is easier to catch fish on a jig when they are quite active and in a feeding mode but that is not always the case if fact. I will always try to catch them on jigs when I start out on a fishing trip but there are many times when perch will just come in and stare at the jig over and over again without hitting it at all. This is when the spear comes into play. The perch spear is much smaller that a pike spear and you lose very little meat this way, less than you would think. You try to aim generally right behind the head if possible. That said I am happy most of the time with a solid hit anywhere. The spear has made many a trip a success when they are in an inactive mood.

Have the spear head already in the water before they come in and just hold it above one and gently push it down. Where do you get a perch spear and how much are they? Seems like it would be a very effective way to pick the big ones out or as said before on a day when they just won't hit.

If you spear a fish the other ones around will scatter but it does not seem to hinder them from coming back in later. The area around will be disturbed for a few seconds but it clears up quite soon. Some people swear by disturbing the sand on the bottom it will bring in curious fish to check things out. Its like banging your jig on the bottom to disturb the sand. Besides the neat thing is to see the outline of the fish you just spead in the sand. If you are good or just lucky you can get two for the price of one.

BobI used to spear pike when I lived in ludington and I know it disturbs the water,,, I was just curiouse if it was worth spearing that one big fish and scareing the whole bunch out of the hole. The best thing to attract fish to the hole is fish in the hole. If they came right back it wouldnt be so bad. Ill try it and see what happens. I had some mosters in the hole tues. that wouldnt eat,,,Ill have to see if I cant make them eat a spear.

I usually throw the spear when they just wont bite but lately they've been biting really well so while I'm playing keep away from the smallest of the school, I'll slip the spear into the water over the biggest fish. Sometimes if they're biting well, they wont leave the hole so I leave him on the bottom and take a few better fish by hook. My cousin and I took 3 by hook with the nicest stuck to the bottom....God I love Ice Fishing!!!:)
