View Full Version : Navigation light ?
I'm going to replace the lights on my boat and was looking into going with the lights that mount to the sides of the bow. Like these.

But then from the frt it would like the pic in this -

Sorry for the links but that was a easy explination.
Is that "legal"? Or do the front lights need to be mounted on the bow so at a certain angle both lights can be seen?
Thanks

Transom/Anchor lights must be 360 degrees and must be higher than the highest part of the boat (ie: passengers and/or Bimini Tops). Side mounted running lights must be visible at 112 degrees and RED/GREEN Combo are 135 degrees.
depends on the length of your boat - see the link -

Ferg,
Your correct. Thanks for clairifying.
Boats 26 foot or longer require sidelights and a Masthead light in addition to a transom light. You cannot run a combo setup on a boat 26 foot or bigger.
Boats 26 or shorter with combo bow lights require a 360 degree all around. Boats 26 foot or less that use side lights require both an All Around and a transom light.
As I had briefly mentioned Side lights require 112 degrees of visibility and combos require 135 degrees.
Side mounted running lights must be visible at 112 degrees and RED/GREEN Combo are 135 degrees.
My boats a 18fter' . I think if I keep them toward the front I should be all right.
Does anybody know who I could talk to about making shure there "legal" before I get them permintantly mounted? (Coast Guard, DNR)

.
Ok now Im lost!
My boat is less that 26'. Im just talking about the front bow light. Are you talking about a 360deg. all around light on the rear of the boat or the use of a combo light? Im trying to do away with having to mount one on the top in the bow. If I need a combo no matter what, I wont waste my money on the side lights.
Just want to be clear.

One,
Your idea may work if you have side mounts that are 135 degrees. Don't plan on it being legal if the side lights you are specing are 112 degrees.
oH, I think I understand now!
The light themselfs have certain degrees, not a dergee in relation to where their placed on the boat.:dizzy:
