Hey Guys,

After reading about Johns misfortune, but better yet Survival, Glad your ok John. I finally realized that I must have a suit, my kids need there father. In my opinion everyone should have one. That said, does anyone know of a local store that may stock the Suits? I have called West Marine and Boaters World and they both informed me that they need to order them. I was hoping I could find one locally a little quicker. Thanks in Advance for the help.

Over the last couple of years BPS has carried them, but they aren't always out on the floor. I bought one last year, they had to look in the back for a while but eventually found the right size.

I have both the Mustang suit and the IDI Arctic Armor.

If you are walking, you will sweat to death in the Mustang suit, and it's pretty heavy. Great for riding though. And it will keep you warm (supposedly) if you fall in. Early Spring, jigging for walleyes, I'm wearing the Mustang.

The Arctic Armor suit is great if you're walking. It will keep you afloat but won't give you much protection against hypothermia. You need to be layered with wool underneath.

I paid $225 last year, seems like a good deal when you look at the cost of a quality set of bibs and parka.

I have this one: Also, you might want to ask Steinfishski if he can get it for you using his discount. I believe he saved me about 30% when I ordered mine.

What does non-USCG approved mean? Not enough buoyancy or what?

I really don't know. It sounds like it meets the European requirements. I couldn't find the specs on the Mustang suit to make a comparison. I wasn't in the water long at all but it seemed to be plenty bouyant.

I have a camo mustang suit that isn't the same as the Coast Guard suit pictured. It's filled with foam and warm, but not terribly hot.
I'd look around on their website - they've got dozens of different kinds - all full flotation. I don't think the point is to have a "Dry suit" type to protect you against hypothermia like the Coast Guard suits. Those guys need to worry about the possibility of being in the water for a long period of time in a rescue situation. You just need to worry about flotation if you should fall in. Once you're floating and then out of the water, you're high tailing it to the truck...

You'll get so much more use out of it than you think, from early fishing season to duck hunting, etc.

I can't beleive more people don't have them for ice fishing and layout hunting on the lake. You fall in and it's over without one.
Even the guys at the Coast Guard jokingly refer to Carhartt's as "Death Suits"

I agree with Mike...Great suit....if doing a lot of walking the IDI Arctic armour may be the better pick....or you can be like us and own both!! I would not venture out onto Saginaw bay or LBDN without the Coast Guard suit on myself! says there coast gaurd approved! here's a site

Hi Dip the Net, Try sending a pm to Member Dick Graves . He has a few extra survival suits I think he wants to sell. His are older but this is the typehttp://www.stearnssafety.com/dyn_prod.php?p=STRI580&k=80150

I wore one of his suits (XL) over my (bulky) Cabela's Trans Alaska suit last week when airboating. Then I just took it off when we got back onto "safe" ice. I would never gone out if I did not have that suit on !!!! It gave me a lot of peace of mind!! Meanwhile, there are a few pictures of his suit in my gallery. Hope this helps and BE SAFE.

Next time out I think that I'll throw Luckystrike in to see if he floats. If he floats he must either be a witch, or the Mustang suit works. LOL

A big thanks to everyone for all of your input. I have placed an order with Mark at Michigan Rescue Concepts, seems like a standup operation and the price was very competitive compared to all my research. Now lets hope for a major cold snap so I can give the suit a try. On top of the ice!!!:)

Mark, Mark, and his wife Terry are great people.

Yes, the "Marks" are great people. We have had them out to train with us serveral years ago. Actually, Mark lives right down the street from me, but I have not seen him in awhile. I still don't understand how you will bait hooks and such with the suit on, due to the built in gloves. Its hard enought to hold a rescue rope, let alone 3lb test.
I have been in the water as long as 4 hours @ 10 degree air temps, and never felt an ounce of cold.

I got my Arctic Armour suit from KD outdoors. ,,,,,,, Ken is Ninja on this site. I have been out 3 times so far. I love it. It's light, thin, comfortable, not bulky, blocks the wind, and they float . The best suit for ice fishing I have ever had. I got the camo model. I am thinking on trying it bow hunting. I will have it dry clean before bow season and then spray it down with carbon spray or something like that. I am looking forward to early walleye fishing in my boat with this suit because it's not bulky, warm, wind and water proof (I Knelled on the wet snow, a little water was on top of the ice also, last Sat., just to see if my knees got wet, they didn't, I could feel the cold from the ice tho.)
