Getting ready to brew a batch of Brewers Best Red Ale. I've tried this one before and I bumped up the gravity a bit with light malt this time. The instructions says you will get a starting gravity of 1.042-1.045. The last batch I did of this was a little light in the malt department but still very good. I'm shooting for 1.055 for a starting gravity. Just wondered what is everyones opinion on that?

Ramping up a recipe usually isn’t a problem, I do it all the time. However, if you're gravity goes above 1.060 it’s best to make a yeast starter to get good attenuation.

I would bump it up. 1.042-1.045 seems a little low for a red ale.
Like Doc said, I would get my yeast going the day before. I do a starter on just about every batch I do.

Well I increased the gravity to 1.053 and put 5.5 gal in the primary. It took 6.6 lbs liquid light malt extract and 1.5 lbs dry malt extract to get it there. 24 hours after pitching the yeast there was a three inch krausen on top. It's hard to believe that yeast can cause quite a bit of turbulence. I could see small particle going everywhere. Tomorrow is racking day... its time to get into the secondary (Thats so I can use the primary for the next batch).
Thanks all

Yeah...I'm getting the itch to do another batch. I'm thinking either an Oktoberfest (letting it age until Sept.) or a Hefeweizen (letting it age until summer). I consider winter brewing time so that I can stock up for camping season. :D
