Advice;
When fishing with minnows through the ice, has anyone had more success hooking the minnow through the lip or through the back? Mainly interested in da perch...thanks.

I usually hook them in between the lip and the skull. they stay alive longer. if you dont hook them right they will slide off or if u get a decent hit its a goner. Back is usually good if u get it just right.

Hooked through the lips most times. The perch will strike the head to kill. Sometimes I've hooked through the tail with a stinger in the lips. Through the tail really gets the minnow moving. Use the smallest dia. line you can find for the stinger.

When dead sticking tipicaly through the back. This will give a natural presentation to the bait....
When jig fishing for Walleye or perch through the top of the head [skull].
This will give a presentation of a wounded or dieing bait fish....

Actually I hook through the back in winter and in the summer months I hook through the lips . I go by presentation and the type of jig being used but through the ice I find just under the dorsal is best . I find that they stay more active and fresh hooked under the dorsal .

I usually hook thru the tail for tip ups AND perch minnows. Far better action and for me anyways better hook ups..

i use small true turn gold hooks with my minnows hooked through the back. take the hook and insert it so the hook point is looking towards the the head of the minnow. hooking it from the side results in more misses. i also use 6 pound flouro leader with two very small spit shot with a thill pencil bobber. i run this rig with a small orange colored plastic bead that goes on the line and slides around on it above the hook. it seems to work as an attractor. many a times have i showed some guys out there how you catch da hogs.
works for crappies too, minus the bead. but a glow bead works well... actually works pretty damn good.

Lightly through the back. Swims around pretty good and I think it helps the hook ups because a lot of hook is exposed. Just do it above the spine and it'll swim for at least an hour.

The propper way to hook minnows is as follows.If you are fishing still water hook them in the back just above the lateral line on the minnow.If you fish fast or water with current hook them through the nostrils.They wont come off.If fishing in fast current use a trailer rig setup that is with a hook in the nostril and long enough line to tie another hook so you can hook the minnow just above the tail but the minnow can still swim freely.I have learned this from some of the best bait fishremen around.
