I tried 2 local ponds today with 2 guys from work and neither one had more than 3 inches of ice. We'd get about ten feet in and the ice would start cracking. I figured the ice would be good enough with our recent cold weather. We did end up finding ice........it was at the bottom of our glasses:evilsmile

Lake dynamics are a funny thing. Could be spring fed, could be feeder streams, could be exposure to winds, could be a bunch of ducks and geese keeping it open! Just goes to show why you really need to take each step on any lake with caution and never take ice thickness for granted!

Lake dynamics are a funny thing.
That is true but he did say ponds and not lakes. Maybe he was trying to be humorous but if he wanted serious answers then I have to guess that the question was serious.
If they were indeed ponds and not lakes then they would have to have some serious current going through them or be awfully deep.
"headbanger421", if you mention the names or other info maybe someone here is familiar with the ponds and can explain why there is only several inches of ice on them.
