i tried to fish dayton lake on hwy 12 friday am. i get down to the lake with my pfd, spud, picks and whistle. i start scouting around with my spud, 3 or so inches then wham my spud starts going through with one blow. i back up and keep scouting, more thin ice. i couldn't get out to the area i wanted to fish. up pulls a big suv to the launch, out comes a guy and his 10-12 year old son. i chat with him and show him the thin ice. 'THAT SHOULD BE GOOD RIGHT?".
i told him i wouldn't think of bringing my son on ice like that. off they go right accross the thin ice. i stood there praying to god that kid wouln't fall through. a local drove up to the launch and i explained the situation and asked him to hang around a minute, he did(thank you brother). they headed back in but that was a long 5 minutes or so. this guy had no spud or any safety equipment and no brains. i gave him my set of ice picks and a couple of ice safety pointers. i only hoped he listened!
please be safe,

YOU did your best Russ !!! thats all you can do is explain the ice conditions and safety factors .. to him !!
the old saying you lead them to water you cant make them drink !!
I think you are an awsome person to stick around and make sure they are safe .! I cant believe that guy didnt care anyomre about his kid !!
I have been ice fishing many yrs. and on frist ice or ice i havent never been on or dont see tracks i allways take an adult with me! and I am 45!!
we had a guy couple yrs ago die on the ice
he was told to stay off as it was not safe enough for a big dog to walk on
he didnt care he knew it all took off on sled and went out on ice by him self no one knew where her went ! he was missing for 2 day when wife called from detroit to sheriff and said he was missing !
a person on the lk called sheriff and said they could see some thing sticking out of the ice!! the deputy went out (after that day we have good cold snap made ice safe again ) he walked out there and kicked the helmet and there was the guy still in there dead !! he went threw in about 41/2 ft of water !! he died standing there yelling for help!!!
so likei say dont feel bad you did all you could do short of knocking him out !!

Same thing happened to me. Guy thought i was just a wuss and wouldn't believe me no matter what i said and his kid was with him. He walked out few feet and spuded lightly and then turned around and told his kid "Lets go the ice is no good".:dizzy:

You did a great thing by sticking around. unfortunatly the child has an idiot for a dad, and will learn nothing from him about safty on ice.

same thing in pawpaw. we spudded out as far as we could & fished on save ice. pretty soon ,there's a bunch if guys fishing in a bunch. then other people come out without a spud, pulling a shanty across the thin were we didn't dare go. i warned 2 guys & a fat guy & his 10 yr old boy myself. just because 20 guys are on the lake, doesnt mean the whole lake is safe
