The bear are really hammering my baits now. As far as I can tell they are four different ones hitting them. A sow and a cub, one with 5.5" front paws, and one with 7.5" front paws.
I have two pits out with bait and they're cleaning up a couple hundred pounds of chow out of each one every week.
I ran out of the pie dough temporarily, so I put a 55lbs. bag of dog food covered with 5 gallons of cherry molasses in each one yesterday. It was gone today! It even looked as if there was a fight at one pit. There were a few tufts of black hair laying aroung.
Today I put 55# of dog food and 50# of oats in each pit and covered each with 5 gallons of cherry molasses.
I just hope that I can keep enough chow in the holes for a couple more weeks 'cause I'm ready now! But I have to wait until the 22nd.

Make sure you post a pic or two of the bear,
so we can see it.Good luck
If I get lucky enough. First it has to come into the bait while I'm in the stand. Then it has to present a shot. Then I have to get a good hit. Then I have to find it. Then the work starts.

You better check the regs on using oats,,,,, I think it's one of the restricted items for bait because of the deer TB thing;;; But I'm not sure and I have to go to work right now or I'd look it up. I'll check back later. Chris.

I called the Distict Biologist before baiting because I also was concerned about the deer baiting restrictions, and he said that as long as it was in a pit and covered with logs and such I didn't have anything to worry about.
Besides, there hasn't been a deer track anywhere near the bait pits. There's too much bear activity around them. I haven't even seen any coyote tracks near them. That's unusual around here because of the huge coyote population.
