Anyone ever try useing Oats and Molasses for there bear bait, They use it quite a bit here in the eastern U.P.. They have the feed mill mix it, and you can add just about any other grain to it at the same time, Oats are cheap, depending on what else you mix with it should be less than $75.00 a ton. have them mix it with enough powdered molasses till it just about starts to clump-up.. Just a thought..

Never tried using that before but im sure it works well.Do the bear seem to get tired of eating it if you feed them just that?

From what I can gather no birddog, It seems the bears over here have a terrible SWEET TOOTH, I must tell you that I have not hunted bears since I left the Marquette area so I'm just passing on what I have heard. I know hunting in the Marquette area, fish was the way to go, for me at least, over here it's Donuts, bread with molasses, and that Oat mixture I talked about above, and the oats are cheap over here.

Hmmmmm, oats I don't know. Theres not to oats. Bears are terrible sweetaholics. Molasses I heard is a little on the bitter side. I think the bear will come, but if there is a bait near by with dounuts and pie filling thats where they will prefer to go. It's worth a try its cheap enough, my concern will it be sweet enough to keep them interested if there are other baits in the area. But all you need is to have them come in even if they eat a little so you can get a good shot. Good luck, and let us know how the oats and mollases work for you. Born

I recently returned from a successful spring black bear hunt. This is what the outfitter used for bait. 55 gallon steel drum, chained to a tree. Add 50 pounds of whole oats and pour five gallons of KFC grease over the oats. The drum only had the small hand sized opening so the bears had to work the drum to get the slop out. There was enough chain that they could tip the drum over and roll it around some. This keeps the bear pretty busy while you set up for your shot. I saw tons of bears and they loved this bait. Oddly enough there were other animals eating it too, birds and rabbits. It was fun watching cubs roll the drum around. The drum also can help you determine the size of the bear.
