Finally got it all together for verticle jigging. Because I am fairly new to this I would like to have some idea as to where to start. Is the Decker area the best place to start the jigging season? Living in the thumb area,I have access to the whole St. Claire River system. A tip or two is all I need to get started. Thanking all who respond and good fishing.

If you live in the thumb, I suggest staying closer to home and going out of Port Huron and Marysville. Both are great spots that produce year round.
Good Luck and let us know how it is going :)

The Detroit River usually gets hot before the St Clair if your looking to get out in the early season.

Here I was doing so well with my withdrawl sysmptoms and you start this thread at the start of the coldest stretch of weather all season. This is going to take many more hours of therapy!:help:

Thanks for all the info guys. When I lived in Detroit, I fished in front of Hiram Walker on the Detroit river many times. Man that was some kind of walleye fishing. Was going to go with the Fin-S bait because of a bud's suggestion. So I have to ask, what is a "fluke":confused:. I really like the south of the Black River info. Leave the house, drop boat in, motor up the Black and drop a line in about 40 minutes. Can hardly wait. Thanks a lot and good fishing.

its just a minnow bait, soft plastic.tons of colors to pick from,go with the natural looking ones on clear water days and brighter ones on stained water days.alot of bass guys use them on a 3/0-4/0 ewg hook as a jerk bait.look on cabelas web-site u will find them....good luck...p.s.go with gulp!!!!!!:evilsmile

I hate Gulp! Sure the fish like them, but they almost get chewed up as quickly as live crawlers! And at 5 or 6 bucks a bag, I'll pick the live ones for free on my fron lawn. From my experience, Gulp products are not exactly durable. Not to mention they dry up in an hour out of the water, then they're junk. JMO.

I dissagree on the Detroit river before st.Clair, last year we were wacking well before the D. And the deckers AREA IS GOOD ALL WINTER! We took 3 nice eyes last Sat in the Mud wyndot worm and white head.

Talking the difference between the DR and say Algonac or Marysville and Port Huron. DR is usually 3-5 degrees warmer than the SCR, thats why the fishing picks up there first.

I kinda agree ,last year you could consitantly catch fish their and the size was relatively larger but when detroit got hot it made the action of algonac look pathetic. double digit single handed catches in under a hour consistant for myself for a little over two weeks!dont get me wrong i like st clair alot more but as far as last year goes jigging just by even reports it was way hotter in the d.two years prior though it seemed like the tables were 180 as per scr being hot well all winter for that matter.weird anyone else notice that trend? Was it due to the warmer temps?

I was looking at some old notes and the DR was hot for about 2 weeks before it heated up in the SCR. But we were fishing up in Algonac, not the Deckers area. The surface temp gauge in my buddies boat was about 3-4 degrees warmer there than compared to a couple days prior in the SCR. Might be enough of a trigger to get the fish started. But I could be wrong, I've been wrong before. Ask the wife, she'll tell ya!

Correct. Lake Huron water is cold, it then runs thru the SCR into LSC which is shallow and warms up a bit. Then it flows to the DR warmer than it left Lake Huron. I would say 3-5 degrees is about right.

tell you what, guys who prefer the D river should stay and fish it, I would rather have less of a crowd up in my little honey holes ;) I like fishing alone and have found a few spots I dont like to share. Winter is a good time to V jig -

The thing with the SCR specially deckers are the deep holes 50-80 foot, water temps in the winter stay much more stable in the deep water than in 20-30 foot. So..... I think alot of fish stay all winter in these holes due to consistency of water temp. I know for a fact that myself and about 4-5 others from this site were wacking from mid march on last year at least 2 weeks befor the D. I should re -state not wacking, 5-10 fish trips, really winter trips I will be out Sat in snowmobile Gear.:yikes::yikes: Hoover I do agree on the #'s at the D last year were stupid! But the size in the SCR was way bigger on average

I am slacking, I came in late but I will admit that when it comes to jigging fake is my favorite FIN-S and Wyandotte worm and I have a few secret plastics I want to try this spring to see how they work as well.. I did pick up at the show some gulp gobies that they had one in a pack for 50cents and I figured I would give them a try, BUT when harness time comes aint no one telling me real is better "NO WAY":lol: GULP BABY.. I will admit I have never fished the Detroit river and I am sure it's great but with the way gas prices are I can wait a couple weeks for the fish to get going here and then you hit them everyday if you feel the need to get them two weeks back:lol:..
I just start fishing as soon as the weather permits and hit my favorite spots, I seem to get the boat out sooner in the spring and gets put away later in the fall now and days.. You also can jig south of any river mouth on the Saint Clair river and do well Black the Pine the Bell and do well.. Cya Slick

I bought a half-dozen of those Gulp Gobies at the show as well. They seem like they'd be perfect for jigging the SCR. We'll find out in a few months.

As far as a two week hot spell for down here....If you combine handlining with jigging I believe I got steady limits from April - June with out much of a problem! Right Castmaster! ;)

The DR guys just brag about their one month that its worth fishing the DR where anybody with a sharp point will bring in a fish, but it dries up and the limits come from SCR all summer and fall while the DR guys are catching sheephead and white bass. and the one month in the spring at DR does not compare to the 3 months in the fall we have in PH.

i live in fraser, maybe 15 minutes to the alter launch for DR, but i make the ride up to SCR to fish, and st. clair or marine city launch is only about 30 -35 minute drive for me, so the little more drive time gets me at a good safe launch, fish all times of the day or night, and a fish cleaning station right at the launch(st. clair). always nice people out to talk to at the launches, and my truck is safe. and PH is about 60 minutes for me, and i make the trip only a few times in the summer, but in the fall, september, october, november 20 minute limits are a blast and you change up your lures to see what they won't hit. gotta come up guys, especially if your thinking of trying night fishing.

I like the afternoons on the SCR. I only live about 5 minutes from the MC launch so its perfect for me. Out of work at 4. home by 4:20. in the water by 5 and catching fish by 5:15.
In my book it just doesnt get any better than being on the water at sundown on a nice quiet night, dodging freighters in the river and hooking a few Walters with the kid.:)
