I will be hunting up there with some friends with a guide. I heard there was a lot of catipillars up there eating the leaves off the trees and was wondering how this might affect the bears or baiting. This will be my first bear hunt. Bergland 3rd season.

>>This will not effect bear hunting due to the fact that they are already turned to moths.Yes they where bad earlier this year but they only eat till there ready to go in to a cacoon then turn into a moth.

Birddog;;;; I hunt up near Ontonagon too;;;;; just outside of Rockland. My buddies dad is reporting that there are no apples on the trees, no acorns,,,, and no leaves on the trees. He said it looks like January. The spot we hunt is adjacent to an old abandoned apple orchard that the bears generally raid. I hope the lack of apples dosen't drive the bears to greener pastures;;;; But the landowner has already reported seeing a big boar on several occasions this year, near where we set our bait. Guess we'll have to wait and see. I've already been stock-piling dougnuts and meat scraps.. Chris Thomas. Oh yeah,,,, my permit is for Baraga;;;; Last hunt period.

I live in Ontonagon Co, they did eat most of the leaves in my area, frost got the oaks, but the leaves grew back. I have many apple trees on my property and none of them have apples. The way I see it if you are baiting you should get a lot of hits as there isn't much/any food in the woods for them.
Good Luck to all, I have 2nd season-Bergland.
