View Full Version : Bottom bouncing questions??

I hope to do better at bouncing the river this year than last. I have a few questions. Bottom bouncers...mostly I see the formed around .040 wire, this seems kinda flimsie and a thicker dia would give a better feel of the bottom.I remember reading here about a guy who makes a bouncer that you guy's were pretty happy with.
Harness's.....I was fortunate to have slick take me out 2 summers ago and show me the basics,I remember he prefers 1 hook harness's, does anyone run 2 or 3 hooks? Do the red hooks that I see on some rigs really do anything different than chrome or bronze hooks? And lastly, at the show yesterday there sure were a lot of holographics to be puchased at a higher price. Does a blade that looks like a fish really look like a fish when it's spinning 30' under the water? They sure seemed to be working good on catching fishermen. Any comments on this fine subject would be appreciated.

I have never had any luck with the holographic harnesses in the SCR or on LSC. I wouldn't want a bottom bouncer to be to stiff or it might drag the bottom too much. I primarily use 2 hook harnesses. I have some 1 hook harnesses but don't use them too much because I catch plenty of fish with the 2 hooks. But I know people who use 3 hooks. Its like anything you ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers. There's no right or wrong way, its whatever works for you. As for the red hooks, I really like them. I have noticed I catch more fish jigging when I use a red stinger hook as opposed to a plain colored one, so I have started buying red hook harnesses to.

I've noticed that the red hooks seem a little better than the gold hooks. We use two hooks on our harness'. I tie mine with floro, and haven't faired too well with some holographics. Never tried the fish-esque blades. I plan on making my own bouncers this year. Pop has the equipment and lead, I just have to buy the molds. I don't plan on making mine L shaped though. I just don't like that leg out that you attach the harness to. This past summer I would start out with a bouncer on, caught a couple, then switched to a teardrop sinker and a short drop. It just seemed that I pulled fish faster after I swapped out the bouncer. I'm going to try a couple other things out this summer also.

Sorry there flyingwasp if I dont remember you from two summers ago but I have taken so many from the site that I cant keem them all staright sorry.. You no what they say, the first thing to go is the mind so with that being said take this advice with a grain of salt..
Why run more than one hook when you dont have to it costs more when you break them off on a snag and I hardley lose any fish even big ones.. I am sure I said this when we went fishing is that I like a amberdeen hooks for the fact if it gets snaged up it will bend out and you wont lose your whole rig, then all you do is bend it back and your good to go,a buddy tought me that and I will never deviate from it..
as for blade colors I think most of the blades catch more fisherman then they do fish, I will admit I have bought many colors over the years but when I am out there I run 4 standard bead colors, red, green, chrome and gold and I find which one they want and change to that.. There is two blades I really like in what ever color you want and there call pro scale blades and the blades that are diamond punched because I think the diamond punched blades throw off a erratic flash.. I use hammered gold #5 deep cup colorado blades, hammered gold, chartreuse, green or fire tiger #4 willow leafs. The colorado's seem to work better up until the end of June-after that the willow leafs. I also use a double hook harness.

You can get the long ones from the local bait stores bottom picture, they have pretty much any weight you want but all I use in every senario is 3oz and some times 4oz some times when the wind is blowing hard out of the north and when your fishing deep water but I mainly stick with 3oz..This one is my favorite it's from Cabelas top two picks and you cant get them anymore there a tangle free bottom bouncer the best I have ever used any other tangle free I have tried dont even come close, the only down fall is the plastic bead should be metal because once in awhile the plastic one will break.. I am thinking of having these custom made thats how much I like them..Cya Slick

I am another continuing student at the Slick Fishing school of SCR walleye arts. I have tried those really long bouncers and don't seem to do as well as with the ones that are around 18" to 22". I would have to agree with Slick's colors but have had pretty good luck with a firetiger blade when I couldn't get anything else going. The one hook harnesses are definately the way to go. I tried running multiple hook harnesses last year in Slick's tourney and ended up snagging a LOT.
If you follow Slick's program and put in some hours in the classroom (river) you will catch fish. :D
Brent, I still want you to school me on jigging this spring now that I have the bow mount electric.

Last Winter, Slick called me and told me he found some bottom bouncers he thinks are good and he could get some for me. They are the ones in the bottom piture. I ordered 6 4oz and 6 3 oz. They were 25 1/2" long when I got them. This seemed way to long so I called Slick so he could tell me where to cut them. (The next part shows how good Slick really is...) so he comes by the house and instead of measuring them, he just eyeballs them and points to a spot on the wire. That's where I cut them and I used them all Summer! I just measured them they are 16" long now and pretty beat up but still good. I only used the 3 oz this season. Still have 5 of 6 of the 3's and all the 4s are brand new. I'd have to say they work really good and I like them becasue they have a heavier gauge wire. So that raises a question. Has anyone ever cut or melted a hunk of lead off say a 4oz BB to make a 3 oz BB? Does that make sense?
Slick at this rate I'll need to order more in two years. Again, thanks for helping a guy out.

Those long bottom bouncer are just the way they come from the guy that makes them, then you cut them to your desired lenght thats all nothing special.. I like the lenght of the bouncers to be like the top two pictures, but I also plan om playing around running some body baits on bouncers then I might leave the lenght a little longer so it wont get hung up on the bottom of the river.. I bought 16 bottom bouncers from slick last year, i cut them in different lengths, 6in, 8in, and 12in, and use different lengths depending on the structure of the bottom, current, wind, trolling speed. They work great. I have found Holographic blades work great in Erie and on Saginaw Bay, but don't seem to work real well on St. Clair or the rivers, i make all my own harnesses, they are all 1 hook (gold color )( use a stinger sometimes )with colorado, and Indiana blades in different colors, and sizes. The more hooks the more snags and weeds:rant: you will pick up.

Hi guys-
I was made aware of this thread by someone visiting my website.
I have a small business making bottom bouncers and can supply any configuration you may need. I have made them for several M-S members.
my site is www.bottombouncers.com
I do make the floating arm type, I have my own design and they are patent pending. The one pictured has one bead, this is an old version, the new ones have beads on both sides of the arm to allow the arm to pivot more freely.
Walleye Mike bought some from me, you can check with him to see if he liked them or not.

If posting a link to my site is not allowed, my apologies.
thanks
