I know that alot of people fish for smelt during the night time. Have heard that they use waxies, worm's that are cut into small peices. Also use a very light bobber or spriing bobber, as there bight is very light, and almost goes undetected.

Thanks for the information, what is a good dept to start at? Do they usually hang close to the bottom or do they like to stay suspended somewhere else?

I have fished for smelt in the Grand Traverse area (Lake Leelanau, Green Lake) this is what we did:
If you are using a fishing pole set it up with three small hooks about six inches apart. I used the small plastic line fasteners and a small hook on a mono leader (six inches You can buy them pre-packaged) place very small bell sinker on the bottom of the line about one foot from the bottom hook. we would use the smallest minnows we could find if the minnows is too big you can cut it in half. Drill two holes an take a ice light (we used a automobile light connected to a battery, just the light with no housing the light will float on the surface) and place in one hole and fish the other. Smelt will start at the bottom but as the night wares on they will follow the Zulu plankton rising in the water column. Use the smallest bobber you can (the weight will command a little larger bobber than you would normally use) When the line twitches pull hard. If you can use a slip bobber, it will make it easier to real the fish in.
Most of us that had stationary houses had smelt reels mounted in the shanty. We would use rubber bands tied in the line for bobbers.
You ask for location. It has been a while since I have fished Littelfield but when I did we fished 30 to 40 feet off the public landing. As I stated in another post, the water drop off fast and the lake is deep for lakes in that area. Good luck and let us know how you did.

i do something similar to "electroniceverything" on gull lake in k'zoo county except : i drill 2 holes , 1 in front and 1 behind me on the outside of shanty. i use those submersible fishing lights (from optronics, found them at d and r sports in k'zoo). i lower 1 just below the ice and the other down to about 30' fishing in 60' of water (they are 300,000 cwp and run off a car battery using only 3w of power...last all night). i fish 2 poles (inside shanty of course) using #4 swedish pimples (used in place of a sinker and adds one more hook to your arsenal) on the end of each line (use single hook), with 2 other #10-12 hooks spaced 12-18" apart ( no bobber of any kind, just limber rods, you'll know when you've got a bite, they'll start "bouncin" like crazy) . i run one line down to the 30' level the other to about 15' so i pretty much cover the water column that is lit up. use any bait you want...waxies, spikes, etc, even fish eyes if you run out of bait. in one night last winter 3 of us caught 468 in 6 hrs. yes...we counted them:).it was non-stop action all night and quite often pulling up "doubles". one of the guys with me even had 2 on 1 hook. if no-one has ever fished for smelt give it a try...it's a blast and great for kids with short attention spans. and fresh out of the lake is better than any restraunt i have found...good luck
