Hi everyone,
I've been in the atlanta,mi. area for a year now, looking for
places that are local to small game hunt (squirrels rabbits etc.)
anyone know where I could get a map that shows areas available
to me? plus does anyone else small game hunt in or near this area?

Alan- there is a ton of state land around the Atlanta area. I am from Lewiston and I spend quite a bit of time in the woods west of the Crystal Lake Area. There is some nice hardwoods for squirrels and I have done well with partridge also. I would get a snowmobile trail map for the area and that will get you started in finding areas that are available to hunt.

Good Luck to you. When you are out in the woods keep your eyes open for the elk. You may even be able to find a shed or two also :D.

I owned a cottage on Canada Creek Ranch, just north of the city. There is a ton of state land around. I know that once you drive through Atlanta and go north on 33, all that land is federal or state land to Onaway. Hunted deer, bear, partridge and turkey in the area. Check into Canada Creek Ranch if you want private land to hunt. I think they have about 9000 acres of hunting only land. You can buy a membership pretty cheap nowdays.

Stop in Atlanta (county bldg.) and get a plat map of the county. It will show all the "public" land and private land along with who owns it.

Thanks for all of the quick replys :)
I have one of the small maps that shows what is supposed
to be state land in the area, but was told to get a better map
(Plat map) by a co-worker, but wanted to be 100% sure of it.
I'll certainly be on the lookout for sheds, would love to get an elk shed
for sure! have seen a few on my way to work (wally world in gaylord)
anyways... Thanks again and hope to get some pics later on.

Where abouts you live up there? I grew up there and my parents still live there.
If your familiar with the Voyer Lake Rd area I can give you some suggestions of where to try hunting.

I live on harwood road, off of 33 south.
the small map I have .. got it from the local paper..
shows what is supposed to be state land at the end of
harwood, but I want to be 100% sure that I'm not on someones
private land.
Thanks again :)

MDNR's web site has maps:

Plat maps are still a good investment.

No kidding!?!? I used to date a girl that lived on Harwood.
If your heading west from 33 you will cross the hunt creek. Right after you cross you will go up a hill. From the top of the hill the rest of the way west is all state land on the north side, and a LITTLE state on the south.

At the top of that hill is Hardwood trail on the right. That meanders back thru all that state land and comes out on 487 north of the dump. I've never hunted back there...but I may have picked a few mushrooms.;)

487 north from 612 is state on both sides of the road till just past the avery lake rd. Actually all that west of 487 around avery lake is state.

Besides getting a plat book, your best bet for a good map is at the hardware in Atlanta. As soon as you walk in the door on the right there is a stand there with free maps. They are actually pretty good maps.

If you need anything else don't hesitate to ask. I lived up there for 6yrs and hunting up there for 20yrs. I could probably tell you anything you need to know.

lol have to ask who she was, I moved up here from florida (yeah I know .. why??? :D ) and got married to a girl I've known for 7 years now.
thats why I'm asking about places to hunt, only been here a year now and didn't want to go onto private land.

Best of luck on the coyote hunt, I've seen a few while driving to work and other places, but don't have a gun for them (Yet) , only have a couple of .22lr's

I also know theres a few bobcats in this area if anyone hunts for them as well, one small one actually was on my mother in laws deck during the summer.
anyways, Thanks again everyone :) and safe hunting

Belive it or not...her last name was Harwwod. The road was named after her great grandfather. Her mother still lives on there, she has a cabin on Harwood rd right on hunt creek.

Be sure to pick yourself up that map at the hardware. It will come in handy.

Wyndigo try this link.

http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/spatialdatalibrary/pdf_maps/ownership_dnr/montmorency_dnr_ownership.pdf

I have a place just south of you off McIntyre Rd.

This PDF, which you can zoom way in on, tells you all the DNR ownership and also Mineral rights that the state owns. That is the brown squares.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the link 8nchuck :)
I know where that road is, will have a look at the map asap
but with the snow, it will be a while yet before I get out.
The GOOD thing about small game hunting here in Michigan is that some animals can be hunted year round .. red squirrels and such.

hondakid my wife knows of the lady you are speaking of, shes lived here for 12 years..her mom lives next door to us, you may know her too, she was married to Frank Beauregard.
Thanks again for all the help :) I'll certainly be getting a map from the hardware store, know that place well too.

I know exactly where hardwood road is, but haven't been down it in a few years (during a visit 4 years ago)
and that was in someones jeep, but during spring & summer I go harwood to 487 on my way to work.
