A buddy of mine lucked out and drew a tag for the Red Oak Unit. He wants to hunt in the Waters/Deward area. Does anyone have any info on where to start scouting in this area? Thanks for the help.

A good place to start would be where one of the two branches of the Manistee River crosses Cameron Bridge Rd., and go north from there. The crossings are just a few miles east of the Blue Lakes that are in N/E Kalkaska County. There are two-tracks of varying quality that roughly follow the river. I'd just walk the two-tracks in the a.m. looking for tracks in the sand. The river isn't deep through this area, so you may want to walk it and check for tracks on game trails that cross the river.
I bird hunt in there once or twice each season and have seen bear tracks in the past. There are lot of blackberries and blueberries in there, but it's still too soon to tell just how good they'll be. It'll depend upon the rain we get thru the summer.
Good Luck!
