View Full Version : Hit the ice

Hit the ice Saturday on my lake. Had a blast. Took home 65 panfish total.
Majority being good sized gills, 12 crappies and 1 sissco to boot. Oh and also got about 17inch smallie. That was a blast on that little rod. Didn't care too much for the half frozen slush that gave me the "falling in" sensation with every step I took. Neigbors said they could hear me coming across the lake. Can't repeat the words that flowed out of my mouth with every freightening gasp I took though.

Well, it was my first and it was good. Minus those tiny little bones that I choked on.

Hard to fillet, they barely have a back bone.

We catch herring every summer and it's hard to fillet them. We usually scale them and leave the fish on ice for 24 hrs. and then thumb the bones out when the meat seems to have a little more firmness to it. Nice job fish lady.

if you could get a nice mess of cisco, get them in the smoker!!!!!! that way you can pick the meat off the bones and eat at the same time, also, a few barley pops a must to wash down with.

I agree with Johnny about the ciscoe. You can smoke them which is a fine meal or can them with a teaspoon of vinegar in each quart jar. After about 2-3 weeks the vinegar dissolves the bones and you can add different spices to taste. One of my favorite additions is hot sauce and barbecue sauce.

Nice mess of fish! That cisco is a dandy. I hope I can get out and try for some this winter. I was thinking either Big Twin or Big Blue Lake in Kalkaska but if the Bays freeze over in Traverse City, I'm definately trying it out there.
