We've used long rods instead of tip-ups for a couple years out there and it sure is a lot of fun. We use the 9 to 10 ft steelhead rods because they have more give than a shorter pole and you set them up so the tip is above the hole. we usually use a cooler or five gallon bucket to prop them in the air. Next we use pieces of cardboard 3inx3in with slots in them and stick those on the line just below the tip of the pole. The cardboard catches the wind and moves your minnow around, which has a treble hook through it's back.
When you set these up make sure someone is keeping a close eye on the poles because if the pike are biting, you will have non stop action. We have set these up with tip ups also and they out catch the tip ups 3 to 1. Let me know if you have any questions, try it out see what you think.

I fish with one tip up and one jigging rod. Jigging spoons, jigging rapalas, chubby darters all work well on the rod and Golden shiners on the tip up. Fishing this way you have a chance of a mixed catch of pike and walleye. Lymans bait store has just about all you need for equipment but their advice has been sort of unreliable as of lately take it with a grain of salt.

That's been my experience with their advice too.
