Since it's winter and things have slowed down..... I've noticed everyone talk about whipping. What is it, how do you do it, and what time of day/night is it productive, and what kind of rod to use? Always interested in new techniques that will get eyes in the boat. 99% of my walleye fishing is done in the river, normal haunts, algonac in spring/fall, st clair in summer, and a little out of port huron.
So, let's hear it fellas, anyone up to giving a little tutorial?

There's a GREAT sticky at the top of this page, Whipping 101. It's put together by one of our most knowledgeable river fisherman on this board - Slick Fishing. I just got into whipping this past summer. It's a great way to fish the river at night. I plan on doing it a lot more this coming season. I used this to get started and I didn't go wrong. Read this thread thoroughly and let us know if you have any questions.

Guys like Bob B, Big Daddy Benelli and TimEye are a good source of info on Whipping as well. Best thing to do is read Slick's thread above, then do a search for "whipping", lots of good info.

If you make it to the Ultimate Fishing Show this week stop by the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association table. We will have a whipping set-up on display.

Should be someone there to explain whipping just about every hour the show is open. We also will have some sort of wirelining set-up to demonstrate that type of fishing.

One question.... Does this method work for the morning as well as night? I don't have a kicker mounted to my boat yet so jigging is out of the question. At least on my boat that is.

I've never seen it done in the morning. You need to be out there late at night when they come in from the deeper waters in the middle of the River up into the shallow water.

A lot of people do really well Chugging instead of jigging...and you don't can just drift for that, no kicker needed.

Fish have been caught whipping in early or late daylight hours, but it is much better at night. A lot quieter and calmer water at night too.
But, beware of the South wind above 15mph..............Bob B.

Gernally, what size Raps and plugs does everyone use? Also, what type of plugs? Run of the mill pencil plugs, rabble rousers? Everyone use regular floater raps, or has anyone tried the different styles of raps? How does weather effect the bite? Dead sticking work better in inclimate weather, so on and so forth......
I'm sure I'll come up with all kinds of questions before this thread is dead.:D
I did read Slick's thread and I liked it very much. The second set up, I believe it was yours Bob B, is familiar. We use to run a set up like that years ago while trolling. Very productive.

As for Rap size I go with a #11, or a #9 but usually the larger one. Slick Fishing has an AD for Pencil Plugs now and they are a pretty good price (Just picked up a bunch). South wind above 15 usually does not let my anchor hold  and I seem to troll up river. Night time is the best as Bob says, all the morons are gone that have to come over at 30 mph to see what you are doing . A lot of people fish different, I know some that use 4 oz weights while whipping while MarbleeyeMack and I usually use 1.5 oz. That way you can get out 250 yards in a hurry and come back. But the best nights are when you drop over the side and hit at 50 ft, over and over again.

With the lures anything with alot of action and is larger than a #11 just kills your arm. (Probably why you can tell a handliner, and which side of the boat he fishes from )

I started out with a 3oz sinker but downsized to a 2 - 2.5oz (depending on current) as it made it easier to get the line further back.
I was using a 9oz rapala for the end bait at the start of the year, but as the season progressed I switched to a #11 because it kept the Smallmouth Bass of my lines.

Don't forget you can use Fishstalkers or Bombers also instead of Raps. I have caught alot of fish about an hour or 2 before sunset, but as soon as the sun goes down it gets really good. I've also done good from 2am to 5am... If their there with the bait fish you'll get them...

this was still in my photos here, last spring my best goto combo was third one down in first column, and than the top one in the second and third column. those 3 were killer for me for whipping and pulling wire until sometime in late june.

Everyone has their favorite lures. Just like that one lure did TimEye right last year, didn't do a thing for me. I was getting them up on #11 & 13 Vampires for the better part of the season then Clown Nite-Stalker managed to get a few into the boat towards the end. Each year it's a drifferent lure that catches more then the rest... You might want to think about getting a good assortment to choose from...................Bob B.
