Winter elk season finishes with high success rate - by Jim Young
The 2007 Winter Elk Season was completed last Tuesday with 118 successful hunters out of 126 permits issues.
According to DNR wildlife biologist Brian Mastenbook, the high number of animals taken means that a tentative January hunt will not be held. Thirty-nine elk were taken in outside of the core elk range north and west of Atlanta. "The hunters took a bunch of animals in the outlying area." said Mastenbrook. "We took them out by Johannesburg and by I-75. We did not do a good job by Hillman — only west of M-33."
Mastenbrook was hopeful that next fall’s elk hunt will reduce the herd near Hillman, were the animals occassionally infringe on farmland.
This year 13 permits were also granted to area native american tribes, as part of the current concent decree of the 1836 treaty which allocates fishing and hunting rights to the tribes. These permits were given to the tribes without any stipulation as to how they should distribute them amongst their members. The youngest hunter this year was 12 year old Reginald Kushion of St. Charles. The oldest hunter was 88-year-old Frank Mulholland of Hillman. The largest elk taken was a 680 lb. 6x7 bull
