View Full Version : If you could change one regulation what would it be?

What deer hunting regulation would you change first for Michigan's deer season?
Personally, I would move rifle season back one week and limit it to five days.
Lets compile a list and forward it to Lansing for approval.
Please, let's leave the debate of the suggestions to another thread so this one doesn't get lost in a blather of pros and cons.

since xbow already taken how about a license with one buck and one doe? How you fill them is up to you:D. Archery gun or smokepole but when you fill your two tags you go fishing. Of course areas with over population goals buy more permits as needed

12-30-2007, 05:20 PM
Pluggin the gun to allow one shot, mainly to curb the idiots that think they can hit a runnning deer while not giving two sh_ts about what in the background,
And making the youth hunt antlerless only or eliminate it,too much violating in that hunt by adults using their kids as a front.

OBR sounds good to me. My son and I were talking a couple weeks ago and we thought that there should be a drawing for your buck tag, like the doe permits. If they do this for say.......3-4 yrs then go to the OBR think of the class of bucks we would have to pick from.

A half dozen things come to mind, among which include substantially strengthened law enforcement (right now, in my area, we essentially have none), and beefing up trespass laws.
If I had to choose one, only one, it would be adoption of a true OBR(as in one antlered buck per calendar year). As Munster has patiently explained, it needs to be statewide (just like in KY, OH, and IN)or else it will be an impossible enforcement joke, as guys could still buy two buck tags.

Mandatory deer check in. Failure to do so pay a fine or lose privlage next year. One 3 on one side buck rule. No baiting Period. Raise licence fees 5 bucks a year over the next 3 years. Get rid of the youth season and shorten the late bow season to end when muzzleloader does.

OBR. Allow all hunters to take only one antlered buck all year, of any size, in all seasons, anywhere in the state.
:yeahthat:
This is a really hard decision...we have alot of rules that are questionable.
One buck per year with button buck counting as a buck.
In Zone 3 make every third deer season antlerless only for the entire season until the population is in balance with more quality bucks reaching maturity. Kinda the same theory as slot limits in fishing. Imagine if every third year every buck survived the season.
Mandatory deer check in within 24 hours of kill.
Criminal background check required for the purchase of a hunting license. No felony convictions period allowed, no misdemeanors within the last 3 years. Hunting is a privilege that should be limited to ethical, responsible citizens.
Basically focus the rules on 2 things 1) making sure more good bucks roam the woods and 2) keeping the idiots out of the woods.

I love the OBR but worry about the enforcement of it. Therefore, I would like to see it occompanied with a mandatory DNR check of all deer kills. I know that there are not enough funds to support such an effort, but we are just dreaming right?

2. Dec archery opened to crossbows.
3. OBR: One buck per hunter, use it either firearm or archery.

Interesting thoughts.
I would combine the use of Proposal G along with combination of the earn a buck rule and one buck rule. However the state is to diverse to apply one rule over the whole state. Lets allow the biologist do there work, unimpeded by politics, for the best of the local herds. . . not try to manage the entire state with the same rules.
Not keen on antler restrictions but would go for the buttons are a buck tag. Also the crossbow in late archery season.
Happy New Year everyone.
I'm surprised nobody has suggested this yet however; I would actually like to see the archery season extended until January 31 each year.
Happy New Year Y'all.
