View Full Version : So I shoot a coyote....
...and would like to have his hide tanned, where do I begin?
Should I attempt to do it myself or is there somewhere I can go and have it done?
Is there anyone that does this kinda close by me?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can do it yourself in a 5 gallon bucket with tanning solution and rock salt. Put the hide in the rock salt solution for a week, stirring around a couple times a day. Then rinse a couple full bucket fulls of fresh water, and add your tanning solution for 24-36 hours and rinse that again and you are basically done. Except to rub in neatsfoot oil on the inside of the hide until supple. You can get the tanning solution at a trapping supply place. do a search. Its only $15 a bottle to do half a dozen hides. After the hide is dry brush it out with your hairbrush and spray a 3 to 1 part solution of conditioner on the fur and let that dry and rebrush.
I see that Cabelas has some tanning solution, would that work?
Would like to tan the hide and keep the fur on it for a wall mount.....

Yes that would work. Its nice when you do a hide yourself. Makes the smile all the better when you show it off to friends! :D:D

I have tanned a mink and a racoon myself but I guess that I'm not that good. The finished product was not good enough to hang on the wall. I'm sure I could get better with practice.
Any hide that I want to have in the house or as a show piece goes to the taxidermist. For 75$ I end up with a beautiful fur.
I'm not trying to discourage you because there is more pride in doing it yourself but you may want to practice on something that does'nt mean much to you.
Just my opinion.
