I'm lazy and dont feel like researching this so I'm just going to ask. My girlfriend would like to start hunting, she's 19. Does she need to take hunters safety, even though I think it would be good for her, but due to school might not be able to. Does she on a legal level?

I had asked some friends and they said that they thought it was 18 years back but it may have been moved to 21 years when you dont have to take it.

Thanks guys!

It seems that I remember something about born before a certain date you did not to have hunter safety if you have already had bought a license with in two years or something of that effect. Mich as a new law in the books I believe it is called a mentor hunt or something like that. It is where you are aloud to take someone of legal age along with you out and let them shoot an animal but you have to use YOUR tag. Hope this helps

All have to take it unless born in the 60's as far as I can remember. But she is far from a 60's baby.:)

She can also hunt on the apprentice program without a hunter safety class.

Looking through the site she can take some online pre cert. courses and do it on her own time.

She's excited, and had me send her the link and she's going to work on it.

Thanks guys!

That only gets her a certificate of "completion" if she can find a class that does the rest off the course. The on line class is good for those not able to do a two day class.

The program I believe you are referring to is the Apprentice Hunter Program.
A person of any legal hunting age can buy a license for 2 years without taking Hunter's Safety, but they must hunt with a licensed hunter 21 or older.

The Apprentice buys their own tag and uses it....it is illegal to use YOUR tag on game that someone else has killed.

I spoke with a officer from the DNR last November and I was told You have to use YOUR tag. It would be just like our fine state to make it so confusing:dizzy:. The other stipulation is that thy only can do this for two years.

If that is what he told you, then he was wrong....no if's, and's, or but's.

The officer might have said that you must have a tag to hunt the something as the apprentice??? That might be where the confusion came in ???

Apprentice Hunting License

A person who does not have a hunter safety certificate may purchase an apprentice hunting license. To purchase this license you must have, in your own name, a valid Michigan Driver License, state of Michigan ID card or DNR Sportcard. An apprentice hunter may purchase this license for two license years before he or she must successfully complete a hunter safety course. The apprentice hunting license is available to residents and nonresidents.

Apprentice hunters under age 17, when afield, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or someone 21 or older designated by their parent or guardian. This individual must possess a valid, regular hunting license to hunt the same game as the apprentice hunter. "Accompanied by" requires the adult to be able to come to the immediate aid of the other person and staying within a distance from the other person that permits uninterrupted, unaided visual and verbal contact.

Apprentice hunters 17 and older, when afield, must be accompanied by someone 21 or older, who possesses a valid, regular hunting license to hunt the same game as the apprentice hunter.

A person may accompany no more than two apprentice hunters while hunting.

I thought the question(s) you were asking are-

Does a 19 yo need hunter safety-- YES

Can a 19 yo take a HS course-- YES- from about 12 but others say 10 yo- 19 for sure and you both should if you have not.

One can buy a license without it BUT and I say again BUT when you sign the license you are stating that you meet all requirements--one of which is hunter safety. To sign without HS if I remember is a misdeamenor..

DONT DO IT...

I agree went through the same Q/A for my daughter last year when she was 10. Try opening the hunting regs book it's pretty clear. The apprec. program is great. Gives a person the opportunity what being afield is all about.

Some times it pays to do the research yourself, a great way to avoid the misinformation

CL Lewiston,

Just to clarify.....no offense intended towards you....I quoted your post but I was referring to the entire thread in general.

The reg's are so darn confusing for most people, DNR employees included, so it is very hard to wade through it all and come up with correct answers/interpretations.

Most of what you said is true.

BuickBoy, you have mail. Post #13 is corect, right out of the book, as for the apprentis licence. As for the couse requirements, pre 64 no, anyone after yes. You have a couple choises, (1) A reg. class, (2) A on-line class- pluss 1 hour with a certified inst. passing the hands on and written state test. (3) A home study course through a cert. inst. This requires a 1 hour intro. self paced reading, 1 hour hands on, and 1 hour state written test plus hands on test. Those are your options, Good luck.
P.S I am a cert. inst.

Thanks a lot.

We have a local rod and gun club that has a certified instructor, which is where I did my time. My idea is that if she can get the online certificate, I can arrange to meet with him when we come home from school on the weekend.
