Those who saw my earlier post know I recently got a deal on a .45 cal Knight Extreme. I tried the 200gr Hornady SSTs that some guys here recommended with 4- 30gr Pydrodex pellets and I'm getting sub 1" groups at 100 yds (assuming I do my part). Needless to say I'm very happy with it. So happy, in fact, that when I found an even better deal on a .50- I bought that one, too! :D The wife's shaking her head and I'm grinning with anticipation of getting it out to the range!

So now to my questions:

My .50 Eclipse will only shoot Powerbelts. (Please, no fighting!- Nothing else wants to go down the barrel without a hammer). But I like the accuracy and ballistics of the SSTs in my .45 and want to try them (or other bullet/sabot combos) for the .50, Which weight SST do you think I should try first (250gr or 300gr)? My shots are rarely long (>150yds) where I hunt- but occasionally one could be if I was comfortable with taking it.

Also, are there other bullets you guys have used you like in the .50?

Lastly, should I mess around with 150gr loads? I'm not that recoil sensitive (I love my .450 Marlin! :dizzy: ), so that's not really an issue.

Thanks for the input! I'm really getting hooked on this smoke pole stuff!

John

I would try the 250's first.

I have had real good luck with 120 grains of 777 and 200gr. or 250gr. shockwaves out of my .50, I shot a 450 marlin out of a BFR revolver twice and that was one time to many.

The SST and the Shockwave are the same exact bullet. Might I suggest that you try the Shockwave SUPER GLIDE? Pick it up in the 250gr. and I think you might be surprised how much easier it loads...
Wish my wife would let me buy another muzz......

Are the shockwave and sst the same bullet, really? If so, I didn't know that.

yep as said above, the shockwaves are made by hornady.

If the bore is tight, remember that there's a difference between the Shockwave and the SHOCKWAVE SUPER GLIDE.
The SUPER GLIDE sabot will load easier.

First of all, I didn't ask. I saved most of the money in an envelope in my sock drawer. And then I went looking for a really good deal. I got the rifle NIB for $170.00 including shipping (Mossy Oak stock and blue barrel). Not bad for a rifle that lists for well over $300.00. And don't think I didn't show her several listings with prices even higher!

No woman can resist a good deal and they respect a bargain like we respect an 8 point buck. Just tell her guns are the "shoes" of the male world. You need one in every color and one for every occasion!;)

Besides, what can she really do to you except make rude comments about "Boys and their toys"? For advice from the Master, read Pat McManus's story about "the Expanding Modular Gun Cabinet".

Does anyone use the 300gr. bullets?

How do the Shockwaves load for you? Do you use the "Super Glide" sabot?

Lastly, did you get a pass-through on your deer?

Congrats! :D

John

BTW Here's one that might go for a deal:

Too bad I can't convince my wife that Emily (my daughter and hunting buddy) needs her own .45!

Ya, right. The wife has seen the inside of my safe. ;)
I save my money sort of like that too. ALL my change, which I NEVER spend goes into a bucket and when fall starts, I've got enough for the complete season. I'll break a $100 bill for 2 cents.........

In my Encore the 200 gr. Shockwave will load easy. As I move up in bullet weight, it gets extremely hard to seat the bullet (original Shockwave). This can be typical with Encores. With so many people having the same problem, the Shockwave SUPER GLIDE was developed. The SUPER GLIDE only has two petals instead of the normal 4. They have also changed the durometer of the plastic in the sabot, which makes it easy to load. I currently shoot the 250 gr. Shockwave SUPER GLIDE in my Encore. Its deadly!!!!!
You'll have no problem with pass thrus.

Encore, I had tears in my eyes after I read that! It's a good thing I'd already swallowed my diet Pepsi! I'd be looking for a new keyboard!

Thanks, Matthew. I'm not surprised that the load a little hard. I have a personal theory that CVA barrels are a little tighter than most. Neither of my CVAs have taken sabots without major force in loading- to the point I'm afraid I may not get the bullet down the barrel all the way. On the bright side, they shoot Powerbelts very well (Please- no fighting!). Maybe I'll pick up some Superglides or Harvester crush-ribs and see how they work.

When I get my new Knight, I'll mike the barrel vs. my Eclipse and see what I come up with.

Thanks to everyone for the advice!

John
