I used to do a lot of pike spearing on Belle Isle in the 1960's. Left me with many fond memories. My best day had 22 pike come through the hole before taking my limit. I still try it a few times each year out in Lake St. Clair or near-by inland lakes but usually only take one for the frying pan. No... don't ban one of our outdoor traditions! See you out on the ice.....

NO. Why? Limit another outdoor activity? give the tree huggers another reason to say Pike are people too>?.

I don't pike spear but If that is what floats someones boat more power to them . I also don't duck hunt but more power to them.

As far as the holes cut in the ice. Well be careful. most guys mark them and most ice fisherman watch for them. Heck my 10" auger hole is a danger to foot. should we limit the size of an auger?

NO.

nope don't ban it, we sportsman need to stick together and support each other's activities, together we stand, divided we fall. if the anti's can find sportsman that say there activity is fine but spearing isn't, that just gives them ammunition. i haven't speared myself but would like to try, and i couldn't if it got banned.

Are you throwing the spear or setting it in the water and giving it a good thrust. You should be doing the latter. You can usually get surprisingly close to a pike so long as the water is shallow enough and you're methodical about it. Too many rookies think you actually throw the spear.

To answer the question, I vote no.

Asking me that question is akin to asking me if we should ban bowhunting with compounds vs recurves. Hell no

Only "remember" spear fishing when my dad would occasionally do it when I was a kid, many moons a go. There definetely was an art to it and it was not a sure hit everytime.

I have no problem with someone doing it. Just follow the limits is all I ask.

No way we should all be able to enjoy the traditions and different arts of fishing either handed down from generation to generation or to be the first to start a tradition and be able to hand it down ourselves.

What good is it to the outdoorsman if we all beat up on each others preferred method of fishing???

Sounds like to many people now think of fishing as a line and pole only sport. There is much more to be learned with all methods and most involve patience and passion.

Lets see theres noodling with bare hands, traps for suckers, trot lines for various fish, Bowfishing, seen hawks used ,I even seen some tribes on TV using plant chemicals ( plant as in herbs etc.. not like the ones that kill our fishery as in the rouge river and all ) to sedate the fish to catch on surface there is always the sore subject of the old salmon snagging methods used by my parents and there grandparents and so on and now it is illegal ( dont want this to become a big deal I dont snag but was taught how early on and every fish caught was ate and didn't die stinking on the bank like 98% of them seem to ) and if we keep this up we will soon have to have our fish inspected after catching them to make sure they are up to some anti's standards. Any way lets stop bashing other methods I thought this was a sportsmans forum and all I see lately is arguments as to which method is right and which is wrong.

Lets all enjoy the methods we have left and ensure we have the same rights to pass on to our children. Besides the commercial netting and invasive species have dona a far better job reducing our fish numbers than all the methods above combined but I don't see any one fighting to have them stopped. Soon we will have mighty snakeheads and giant leaping asian carp to tend to and we are debating over very limited methods as it is to catch the fish that is overly goverened already.

Any way that is my 2 cents and I voted NO do not ban.

Do not Ban spear fishing for Pike!!! We are one of seven states that still allows this tradition that dates back to the Indian times. If we lose it...then be prepared to lose the other outdoor sports after that!!!!

id vote no, do not ban it... and for the same reason i hope you all voted yes on prop 3 to give us a dove season... i dont spear, but i dont think its fair for me to vote against it stopping those who do from enjoying it. i own a perch spear... but since getting it as a gift 4 years ago, the seasons just havent made ice like back then, so i have never taken it out.

I voted a big no! Although I havent done it in 10 years or more, my fishing partner an I use to walk the ditches in Lighthouse Cove and spear many pike a season. It was an absolute blast and really burns my ass that Ontario has made it illigal.
