View Full Version : #3 Floating Rapala's
Hey I'm just throwing this question out here. Has anybody else had problems keeping these in tune? I've had some trouble with them and getting them back in tune is a pain. Anybody else having this problem or you think I could have just got a hold of some poor made ones?

Bryon were thoxse brand new or had they been in your tackle box maybe banged around?I know I have checked some of mine and being they get thrown around alot it knocks them out of tune.

Specifically Rapala #3, no. But I usually check a lures run before using it. I had em right outta the box run bad before.
I had little gadget given to me called a Tune-a-fish or something. Works, but so would a piece of steel with a slit cut in it or pliers. Sometimes it can be a 8!+(# getting them true again.

AaronAaron, some of them out of the box. It's a big reason why toward the end of last season I stopped using them. I was catching fish on them at the mill when I had them tuned. If you remember the sheapshead I got up by the bridge this past summer on the F3 Silver, that was a brand new out of the box lure and after that fish it wouldn't go back in tune. Not sure if you remember that or not.

Nobody else has any ideas :(
Small lures are harder to tune, they are so sensitive to the angle of the eye. Just tweak it imperceptably a couple times and it should eventually tune.

There are 2 ways to tune a rapala.
1. Bend the eye straight either to the right or left off of verticle.
2. Twist the eye diagonally to the right or left off of verticle.
It may take 10 tries to get it to finally run straight.
I used to carve my own lures when I was a kid and some of the eyes would be bent at a 45 to make it run straight.
No. 3's are smaller so there is less surface to give them action thus being harder to tune.
Good luck & I hope this helps.
Remember you can tune a rapala but you cant Tuna Fish.

#3? Sheesh... just step up to a REAL lure... like a #10 or bigger and you won't have as many issues!! :D

You'd be surprised the size of the fish that go after those things. I even had a carp go after one and the carp was about 10lbs :dizzy: Lucky he didn't get hooked. That wouldn't have been fun in two ft. of water. I'm not even sure how it go up to that part of the stream

I'd drill a small hole from the back , bottom side and shoot the old super-glue gel in the hole to 'pin it' in place...

OVAL split rings help a bait run truer too.

There are times when those F-3`s put more walleyes onshore than any other bait in the summer.I own almost every rap color in that size.Theres another bait about the same size made by rebel called the f49 holographic minnow that seemed to work better this last year though.

I'm going to try those F3s at Croton this spring I think. Maybe I'll get another big steelie on a small rap.
