I have used buckwheat hulls the last couple of years and my success isn't all that great on the canines. I've caught coyotes and reds but not a whole lot of them. My trapping is only during the winter after duck and deer hunting so I usually forget to collect dry dirt. I've heated dirt and melted wax into it and that worked okay but kind of time consuming. Just wanted to know any one's opinion on the buckwheat hulls.

This is my first year using cover hulls. I caught a fox this morning using them. I think they work well in deep snow but the sun tends to melt the snow over them cause they're black. I usually use dirt mixed with some trappers antifreeze or propylene glycol if the snow is not that deep. If the snow is over 4 inches the chance of a canine breaking through to the trap under the dirt is slim. With the hulls the trap can be bedded above the ground and blended to look natural.

Just my opinion.

I have been using a strip of plastic bag, like groceries come in, to wrap under and over my dog traps when I set in the snow. I cut a strip wide enuf to fit under the trap and long enuf to fit under and over the trap. Make sense? The white bag helps reflect the light so the snow doesn't melt as fast and I can cover with whatever ground cover there is nearby. Caught a nice little red the other morning at a urine post. Helps to set in the shade also.
