A great weekend on the AuSable, ended up with a excellent crew for a canoe day on Sat but Friday and Sat night had a delightful BWO (Blue wing olive) spinner fall!! Friday night I walked from Pine road to Whipporwill, never saw another fisherman till about the take out. Caught fish on Size 20 Parachute Adams, BWO dun and spinners, a few on nymphs. The BWO spinner fall hit around 9pm and lasted about 45 minutes and some fun fish. Nothing really large but a great chance to give the 3wt a work out. Rainned out on Sunday morning so no trico report but there were tricos in the spider webs on Sat. River was a big high (maybe two inches) fish were feeding with agressivly. Still some great fishing up there.

Great post! I am thinking of trying out the AuSable this week (I've never been there).
I am looking for places to wade (I have no boat) - any ideas for the Grayling/Mio areas?
Also, what kind of nymphs were you using? It sounds like you had better luck with the dry flies - did you use any wet flies (emergers, etc.)?
Thanks for the advice!

Fish early--until about 9 or 10 am. You'll see tricos and some slate wing olives during that time, then you'll see canoes (if you're weekend fishing). Then fish late--8-12 pm with mice and streamers until it gets cold...

Brmata,
Out of grayling some nice starting places for tricos...concider hitting Keystone landing, there normally are some good trics there. Looks for moderate current to slow with dense vegatation (sp) Stop out to the fly factory and pick up some female and male duns..some female and male spinners. If you are by Gates...well check there also.
On a warm night the hatch is fairly early in the day, you will normally find me on the water around 6am with a cup of coffe and watching for flies. I find that the females come off early then the males..I know this sounds nuts but sometimes those pesky trout are looking for one not the other. After a hatch the spinner fall comes in around 9 or so like hatch said, again, keep an eye on what is on the water. After a hatch I will slowly walk by the shore looking for a few pods of fish feeding here and there and toss in a spinner. Nymphs, I was chucking prince nymphs (14s) and doing ok, caddis larve size 18s.
At night hit pretty much any of the public sites along the river for BWOs. There are two publications well three about AuSable from TU, one is Hatches, second is the AuSable book and third it AuSable down past Mio. All show the river, spots to get to, what to expect and are very helpful.
tight lines and have fun!

Thanks so much you guys - your advice answered some questions for me. I had no idea the Tricos were so important.
I hope to get up there sometime this week - I'll let you know how I did.
Thanks again,
Brian
p.s. BigFishFool - nice to hear from another native of "A-squared." I lived there for many years going to school, and I miss it a lot! (Although the Northern fishing spots are closer here in Midand).

Weezer/Riverboy,
I'd love to hit it with you guys. I plan on getting up there around 3:00 PM or so on Thursday and was going to find somewhere to stay. I was going to stay until late Friday night. I'll probably fish early Friday morning too to avoid the Aluminum Floatilla.
Night fishing Thursday sounds great. Where do you guys meet? Let me know and I will be there. I assume we would be mousing? I'll have to buy some mice - any suggestions for patterns? I was probably going to try BWOs too but I usually don't fish many dries; only nymphs, wets, and streamers.
You can email me too at brmarable@dow.com
Later, and thanks for the invite!
Brian
p.s. We still have to hit the Chip again!

I still might head up wednesday evening still not sure yet. I have to save some vacation time. I have to be home friday at least by 5. I have a dinner rehersal to go to, then the wedding the next day. So im hit for the weekend! Your best bet is to wait on flies untill you get there. we can run to Gates lodge its not far at all. I have to go there anyways to get some fly tying materials. well see ya up there!!!
