The application period for the 2000 bear hunting season begins April 15 and runs through May 15. The application sales date was moved up one month to allow hunters to prepare for their bear hunting activities per the DNR.
The 2000 bear hunting season marks a change in the way licenses are issued. This year a cumulative preference point system will go in effect. All applicants will have an equal chance of drawing a tag this year. Hunters who do not draw a tag this year will recieve a preference point. Future applicants who have the greatest number of preference points will be offered tags first. The number of preference points required to obtain a tag will depend on the bear management area and the season (1st, 2nd, 3rd) applied for. Hunters will have a chioce of completing an application, but may elect to fargo the drawing in order to bank a preference point. Up to 4 hunters may apply as a party.
