Went out on Long Lake yesterday, about 5 inches of ice landed 9 specs between 8 and 10 inches and one that was 17 inches, also 1 bass about 16 inches and a bunch of dinky perch and gills. Was thinking about going on hess this weekend but wanted to know how the ice was?

A 17 inch spec???? That is awesome!!! How about a picture? I can't break the 16 inch mark and I thought that was huge.

I have seen people on the west cove fishing for about 3 weeks. no report on the ice but safe enough for 1quad and 3 sleds. brooks lake is doing very well on the powerline cove after dark. i went out last friday and caught 17 specs 8-12 in on glow tears and minners.

anybody know any thing about the many little lakes by bitley?

Ice should be safe but if you're catching them on another lake I'd stay there. I haven't fished Hess in 3-4 years because it sucks. 20 years ago before they killed all the weeds it was excellent fishing. I actually lived there for a few years.

A 17 in. Michigan Crappie is a great fish, congrats! I'd love to see the pic. There is only about 5 or so 17 inchers currently listed in the DNR Master Angler records for the past couple seasons. I love to catch the old papermouths. I'm thinking now as a matter of conservation, it might be a good idea to snap a photo with any 13 plus incher and return them to the hole to keep the good stock going. As far as master angler fish go, I'd either put in on the wall or back in the the water. Good luck.

Hess used to hold some very nice pike. Back 20 years ago we caught a 42" my buddy has that one mounted. Also seen people catch 35+" several times. Not sure how that fishery has changed but it used to have alot more weeds back then and I've herd they weed control the crap out of it now.

As for the "17" uhmm, yah guess you should take it to the DNR and have it recorded as one of the biggest specs in Michigan then. Its a nice spec, but you might want to get a tape on it to verify and if it is 17", you have yourself lifetime braggin rights. Don't forget to post a pic with a tape on it. That will shut us up for sure then :yikes:

Wow if that bucket is 10-11" then that speck must have an EXTREMELY long tail to make up the extra 6-7". Nice fish either way though!!

There's still nice pike in Hess, but ther're not as plentiful as they used to be. A family friend also has a 40+ incher on his wall up there. As for panfish, it's been fairly disappointing. I remember going out with my uncle and getting some really nice specks, but now you have to be right on top of them, (they seem to move a lot up there) and try to grab as many as you can before they leave. And no, they're not very big, mostly average 7-9 inchers.
