I started bear hunting 4 yrs ago, wife and I applied for the first time, both got tags, she got a 300lb boar, I passed on a smaller(100lb) one. I got tags next two yrs, got a 219lb and a 183lb. Very Lucky.

For bait I use old bakery, dry dog food and used grease from resturants, works well for me but just looking for other suggestions to use if/when I get another tag. Shoot Straight

I used the same stuff you used, except I also used corn.I mixed that in with the breads and donuts. It took a little longer for them to get all the corn picked up-lasted a little longer. I also tried some blueberry pie filling. They loved it. Where I spread that on some limbs, the bear stripped the bark completely off. I also tryed some burnt honey. That smell goes for miles. I did not use any meats or fish. If I have to sit down wind of dead fish, it would take the fum out of hunting. I'd rather smell something sweet. How about you?

Sounds like you guys got it together.Sweets are about the best your going to get for baiting bear. Here in the U.P. i would not use meats considering the number of wolves.Good Luck in the future bear hunting.

Larry, Thanks for the info, I haven't used a honey burn before but I will try it next time, when ever that might be.

birddog, I hunt in the White Pine area but haven't see any wolves yet, others near me have seen them though, kind of excited to see my first one but still haven't decided if they are good or bad yet! Maybe a good topic for a forum?

Sweets, bakery, and grease does the job. They sure have a sweet tooth and it helps them build up all that fat they need for the winter. I know the bears this year had alot of fat on them compared to last year. Maybe it was the strawberry cream cheese, lol.Born

I start 'em off with meat scraps, fish, or other potentially smelly stuff. This gets the scent out there. Once the bait is being hit, I add deli/bakery grease. The bears get it on their feet and track it around the bush where other bears pick-up the scent and follow it in. I then switch to bakery. I find it is best to refresh the bait daily if you can. Since I hunt within 10 miles of my home this isn't a problem. I only put out about 5 gallons at one time. Bear will eat whatever you put down. If it is 5 gallons or 30. But if you put out large amounts, they seem to fill-up and don't come back for a couple days. Also, by refreshing the bait daily, the bears become familiar with a fresh treat daily. However, they may wait until 2 AM to feed and you go the entire season just fattening the bears for hibernation.

I recently picked up 10,000 lbs of pie filling later i will pick up 6 tons of cookies and 6 crates of cream cheese i think that will make my season.
