The way it looks to meyou would have to hunt in Wexford,Kalkaska,Antrim Counties to hunt close to Traverse City. Which would be Baldwin Bear Management Unit. And there is only a quota of 33 tags available in that district.

Their are plenty of bears in the Traverse City area. I would try to get a permit for the Baldwin BMU. The Baldwin BMU extends into southern Grand Traverse and Benzie Counties and south to include some of the best bear habitat in the lower peninsula. I would try the Mitchell Swamp in Wexford County or the Baldwin/Luther Swamp in Lake County. There is no shortage of BIG bears in the area. The big problem is getting a permit for the Baldwin BMU, only 33 available this year, but the overall hunter success rate is high, approx 35%. The Red Oak BMU is another good bet. Their are more permits available (1300) and alot more area to hunt. Try the Deadstream Swamp area. Good Luck and Safe Hunting.

Bearman, have you hunted the Deadstrem Swamp area? Are you familiar with the Haymarsh Swamp area, SW of Deadstream? Lots of bear?

I'm more familiar with the Baldwin BMU. I know there are good numbers of bears in both areas. Contact the Houghton Lake Wildife Research Station for better local info.
