Does anyone know if the waters around the tawas-oscoda areas have safe ice yet? Biting at the bit to do some perch or walleye fishing in those areas. Thanks in advance.

All lakes have pretty good ice right now. Van Etten has been solid for perch and eyes. Perch are small for the most part. Have been alot of reports of guys catching alot of 10 inchers, I've fished it lately and as far as i'm concerned there is not a perch in that lake worth keeping. We do do very well on the walleyes out there, just takes some time to figure them out.

Hey OscodaAsh, thanks for the comeback. Am planning a trip up your way in the middle of Jan. Really heard a lot of good things about Van Etten. Also heard that Jerrys Marina is the place to go for Walleyes. Never fished either place, but hope to change that real soon. If you have any other info ,I would be REAL interested in what you may have to say. Thanks again, and HAPPY HOLIDAY.

Perch fishing is good on Van Ettan. Some days, folks are getting nicer fish and some days only 6-7 inchers. Walleye fishing is good on Van Ettan now. The pike are very active right now, also.
Cedar lake has been doing good for Walleye. They usually get Crappie there too.
Ice is good for foot travel on both lakes. Snowmobiles are starting to use them too.

I heard that lake is really poluted with sewage. I used to fish it quite a bit but haven't in quite while. I'm thinking about trying cedar.

I am going to check the map and see if I can find Cedar Lake.Is It in the same area as Van Etten? Never heard anything about pollution in Van Etten , Everything I had heard was all good. Still going to give it a try. Thanks for the info.

How far are they going out on cedar to get the walleyes? Should I bring my sled?

Van Ettan is not any more polluted than every other lake or stream in the state! The Airforce did leave us a nice parting gift in the aqua-duct, but it's contained.
Cedar lake access is limited. I would bring a sled so that you can launch at the Public boat launch (you'll see the sign on US 23). The lake is shallow and has plenty of ice (Right Now). I would head South past the pedestrian bridge (causeway). That's how I fish it anyhow.
Good fishing!

Thanks for all the info. I will probably fish Van Etten and try Jerrys Marina for walleye when I get to that area. Can hardly wait. Will check out Cedar if time allows. Am catching fish where I live in the Thumb, but it's always nice to try other places.

N.E., there was 2 shanties on Cedar yesterday. Didnt seem like there has been alot of traffic. The parking lot at the launch didnt look like it had been plowed yet, just a heads up. Van Etten was fun but no size on the perch. Walleyes and me dont get along:D

greelhappy, I checked the public access by Jerry's this morning. There was nobody there, same as Monday. There is ice as far out as you can see but it must not be safe. We had some strong winds over the weekend which may have broken it up. Nobody at the DNR docks in town either. Saw the coasties there before Christmas with their dive suites on, must have been practicing. Be safe, real cold temps coming next week.
:) this is one of the best threads i have read in a long time:) lots of good info guys, thanks for the reports. i fished van e last year did ok, perch were small but we sorted to about 20 for a nice meal. sounds like they might be growing a little now:D
